If you travel, there is more chance of bumping the RF calibration off. My experience is that the M9's would go in twice a year to be CLA'd. The M9 is excellent, in that it is simple and the RF calibrations can be done locally and within a few days. There are usually two types of calibration errors. One is a bump, however slight it may be, and the other is drift. It is a mechanical device, and it really it is not an issue Just find a local Leica service center that can have your calibrations for you

Charles, you must be really rough on your cameras. I remember you also had RF issues with all 3 of your M240s, am I right?

Isnt it more visible on M240 due higher mpix sensor? Just a thought..

Otherwise, M240 is supposedly more accurate when it comes to manual focus via RF (not sure how true is that, since it would require longer RF base).

It is confirmed by Leica that the RF mechanism of the M240 is more heavy duty. The better focus accuracy comes from the higher contrast of the RF patch due to better coatings.

Edward, I think I was unlucky with the M240's. The first one drifted off calibration, with no overseas travel, and the second about 5 months later with very little use. Generally I am very careful with my gear, so I did find it very frustrating! I have no issue about re calibrating the RF's, but just the time frame needed for the M240's It is a mechanical device, and it will need re calibrating periodically with continued use.

Yes, I know what you mean, especially that we rarely hear about RF problems with the M240. I was just teasing you actually

I haven't been shooting anything interesting recently. Too busy finishing my last orders of the year. This is from this morning at Starbucks:

Here are few M-Monochrom shots with the Elmarit-21 ASPH — all "no finder shots", taken with the camera held a belt level and pre-focused mostly at 1.5 metres. These pictures are part of a 22-shot series called Alone in Bangkok, which you can see here.

Hardly any time to edit personal photos... part of the reason I'd always shot film for personal stuff. But now I have around 12 months of photos to process and put into an album over the next couple of weeks :/. Luckily I don't really take many photos, but still... not such great fun!

Here is one from November. Made me giggle

Ron, a beautiful set as always. A bit different processing on these from you. ??..

Thanks Vik. Not sure I approached these all that differently than lately in terms of PP. I guess they have a bit of a pseudo HDR look that is easy to achieve or fall into by opening shadows and recovering highlights. The scenes were pretty high contrast with the bright sky and everything else in shadow. Looking at them again, I'd probably reprocess them for a bit higher contrast.

Mitch - great set! I love the faces/expressions in all of them. People in daily life... The angled lines, sense of motion and expression in the third one makes it a favorite of the set.

M240 and 28 Cron all probably around f/5.6

Thanks very much Michael and Edward!

Michael - great abstracts and surprisingly similar to Werner's, whose set from Leica I have also greatly enjoyed (looks like it's a worthwhile visit for more than just looking at camera gear!)

Here's one from Central Park..

Is it a rangefinder lens?

Something about it says Canon 85/1.2 to me... though for it to even be focusable on the M240 it would have to be the older FD mount version...

. I've owned the 85L in EF mount for about ten years and shoot it extensively, especially at weddings. I guess the FD renders fairly similarly because your sample image reminds me a lot about what I see in the EF version. Hard to say what it is exactly, but it doesn't draw like a Leica, IMO. Not a bad thing, just different.

It would be interesting to pit it against the R80 Lux or its twin, the 75 Lux... I suspect the Leicas will be way more glowy at near distances wide open.
