Desmolicious, I was trying yesterday to get some flare look but failed miserably. Lot of under or over exposed pictures. Yours look amazing.
Edward, you first guess is right. I am not knife thrower. I have thrown one time a scissor that did not cut but never a knife.
As for the fist picture, it is user error. I struggled with the camera with bright afternoon light. My impression is that center weighted and spot metering has very small difference in exposure calculation in M. I felt that even with these two the camera is leaning towards whole scene more in calculating exposure.
After couple that did not come out towards middle I started playing with exposure compensation and could get some better exposures.
I have noticed a new problem (new for me). It seems that the camera RF mechanism just appears to disconnect. I am not sure how to describe it but what happens with the 50lux so far is that as I am changing things like exp comp or speed dial or aperture, sometime the RF small center window just becomes a dim rectangle that does not show the normal dual shadows. I have to keep fiddling (on off, rotate the camera, lens twist- untwist or something ) and then it would appear again. Very frustrated. I am gonna try some other lens and see it if happens with others too. I put this lens on M8 and it's all good. I thought the RF mechanism is completely disconnected from electronics. I am really perplexed with this phenomenon I am seeing.
Vik, you have to keep your fingers away from the small RF window on the right side of the camera (just below the shutter speed dial) Sorry if this sounds like too obvious but I can't think of any other reason why the small RF patch would black out.
As for the metering, I think it would be best to use classic metering rather than LV modes. This is at least what I normally use. In such difficult lighting as in your last set, I prefer to shoot fully manual. Just find a good shutter/aperture combination and stick with it.
I actually came to the same conclusion and glad you said it that fully manual mode is the best option. I read the little article here in articles section on manual mode again today and have been practicing fully manual shooting. Thank you so much for sharing the wisdom.
Vik, I have done this same thing too . Mostly when camera is tripod mounted and I am holding it differently than normal. The rangefinder patch just goes away... it's very annoying. I figured it out pretty quickly though, thank goodness ... I was at a paid real estate shoot and only had an hour to work!

Just kidding, that's the cutest post I've seen in a while, and what makes it funny is how true it rings. Who hasn't accidentally blocked the window. I do it all the time.
What's more annoying yet is the smearing. In 9 months you would think I could learn to keep my fingerprints off the RF window, but no! I have to clean it every day.
@Gary that last landscape is my favorite of all your shots in that locale #2 was the really cloudy one.

Vik, as Edward and Charlie have mentioned, it happened many times to me too, and you think something is wrong! Another useful tip is to have a lens cleaning cloth in your pocket, so you can keep the other RF window really clean. This will give the sharpest view of the RF window, otherwise it just seem fade and it is not so clear. Again I panicked thinking something was wrong, but just some grime of my fingers.
Personally, I find both exposure modes have their pluses. Generally I found the LV metering very good, except with WA's, as it would underexpose. Of course easy to push at low iso's. Though for night street shots, just go manual. Much easier!

unoh7, Charles,KatieInTexas, I am just glad to know that I am not the only one to have done that, although I do feel I am one of the few that would just go out and ask for help without thinking what else it could be. Having returned one for a legit reason, something is wrong with the camera was the first thought that came to my mind.
Nice set unoh, 2nd is really good with details on both faces. Having struggled with exposure yesterday, I have a lot of respect for getting the exposure right in harsh light now.
Hmm, the EXIF is all kinds of screwy ... I didn't touch the aperture, I shot wide open the whole time. Just look at the difference in shutter speed between the second and third images ... +2EV, smaller aperture, but higher shutter speed at the same ISO on the second image? Definitely not right. Is this a common issue?
