p.5 #1 · Sony NEX as a Leica M8 alternative

Yeah I expect the Nikon MX and Canon APS-C powershot camera to be a bit better in terms of controls and form factor as well

Judging by those lens tests for the 3 launch lenses, Sony REALLY need Zeiss or someone competent to come in and design some glass for them. The 16mm gets stomped by DP1 lens... I guess it has one stop advantage though. If we forego focal length for aperture, the Panny 20/1.7 at 1.7 beats the Sony 16mm at 2.8.

looking forward to whatever is next in the e-mount series.... really hoping they add an integrated EVF, FF sensor (just tweek their 24mp) and to a lesser extent IBIS....after that all I want is an M-mount adapter

thrice - where did you see the lens test? i haven't been able to find any in the reviews i've seen so far.

this looks really exciting to me but i want to know how manual focus works. is there a quick easy way to zoom in the lcd with manual focus lenses or will these cameras not even shoot without getting info from the lens like some low end sony alphas? also, is the manual focus on the 16mm focus by wire or is there a direct connection to the lens element movements? can manual focus assist activate automatically on nex lenses?

"A mount adapter will be available, giving the ability to use Sony and Minolta Alpha-mount lenses. The LA-EA1 adapter will have a motor to control the lens aperture but no way of driving the autofocus (even for SSM and SAM lenses with built-in focus motors)."

That seems classic Sony. They really want you to buy another set of lenses. Innovation but requiring re-investment in a new system, even for loyal users. I am betting that given the size of this camera body and the size of a lot of the Sony Alpha lenses, use won't be that practical anyway. I can't see bolting this to a tripod and then mounting a 135mm lens to it without additional support for the lens, especially since most of the mount is external to the camera body. I can't imagine the mount being able to support a much larger heavier lens than what is pictured in the set. The loss of in-body IS will also make the use of any longer lenses from the Alpha line a bit iffy as well.

All of the features this way and that are moot though if the image files from the cameras are not acceptable.

this is another camera that would benefit from small prime lenses. the 18-55 kit looks huge and defeats the purpose.

No EVF = FAIL

WTF are they thinking?

looking at these pics doesn't anyone else feel that sony left enough room that they could put out a taller pro NEX where the mount will no longer we larger than the body (thus look a little more like a typical rangefinder) but there is room for a EVF above the rear LCD...perhaps a EVF off to the side like on a rangefinder so that they can still keep the centrally located accessory/flash port.... something tells me they aren't too dumb when it comes to the design of this system... they just put out the cheap small cameras first and are polishing off the more refined ones... heck you can tell they're still working on it since the 18-200 isn't even available yet and I thing the ZA adapter isn't available right away either. As tempted as I actually am by the NEX5 I want to see what's next... think sony is onto something really good here. As for video, having it on a still camera is a nice touch but the fact that they are making a dedicated e-mount camcorder is important too... yea, you gotta by the camcorder but you get a device that's ergonomically better designed for video and you cans till share you lenses between video and still system.

the other think I was thinking was b/c these have the articulating screens and b/c the cameras are already SO thin, sony probably didn't have the room for the IBIS mechanism... if another version of the NEX is put out with a standard LCD and an EVF, they may have enough room to wiggle a version of IBIS into that thin space... I know this is just day dreaming at this point but I think sony wanted to attract all sorts of buyers to the system first... not just more advanced photogs so thats why they put out a really small, pretty cool looking (IMHO) camera that has much better IQ that point and shot while being comprable in size (perhaps even smaller?) that some of the super zooms out there. Now that these mass market oriented cameras (relatively speaking here... dont jump down my throat) are out, I think they'll focus of what NEX can REALLY offer someone who is more serious about photography.

PS: Im assuming the current e-mount lenses only illuminate a 1.5 sensor (they can't be used on a potential future FF NEX)?

wow, the corners really suck on those... oh well, from the mount dimensions I can't see why there will not be an M-mount adapter from a third party sooner than later.

thanks, i guess that is to be expected from a lens that is only a $100 add on. oh well, we'll have to see how these cameras handle wider m-mount lenses without microlenses and what zeiss has to offer.

Hmm, that 16mm shot linked to by Thrice is not very convincing. Too much CA and poor corner performance. Add to that, uneven corner performance. Lens look like an average performer. I want top notch.

I'd like so see more of what the camera can do and I hope more inspiring lenses will follow suit. A 24mm equiv. f2.8 is good enough for me but with that kind of performance I would not invest in one.

Hmm, hopes for the Zeiss 24/2 for my Alpha are still up though.

I think we are all looking for a digital Contax G2 and the NEX 3 and 5 are obviously not. I will wait to see what Sony will do with the higher end models. In the meanwhile I will buy a red NEX 3 for my GF. Will show you some photos when we get it

these might actually work better for my purposes with m-mount and contax g lenses then they will with native nex lenes. looks like changing aperture on the lens with manual focus lenses will be much easier then changing aperture through the camera's gui.

not yet... but that port on top makes me think we might see a nice one eventually (or maybe just an integrated one on a higher end model).

Good news. I just found on IR that the NEX supports release w/o lens, auto gain up, and magnified manual focusing. It should be great for alt. lenses. link
