I'm skeptical about the VF. Notice in the picture above how the data port door opens up towards the user and leans against the back of the flash. It seems like it would be clunky or in the way with a VF. Granted, maybe that door is removable??
looking at that picture it kind of looks like that may be the bottom of the camera.
Maybe not. I can just see the lens markings. Perhaps there are two doors?
Looks interesting, but it's not really a M8 alternative. It will be interesting to see the actual specifications when the camera/system is officially announced.

No IBIS but a 16mm 2.8 "pancake" lens with IS. What's that about...
A pretty lame offering in my book.
Apparently they put the IS on the 16mm in the lens for video as having it in lens will interfere less with AF when shooting video. I would prefer a smaller lens without IS as I think the equivalent of 24/2.8 suits my needs well. But I can live with it (IS) if it works well.
I hope they have som really nice primes coming up, a 40/50-ish fast lens and I would be set.
Great, I will now have to wait and see what these Sony's have in store for us. Sounds promising if it's got an OVF. Hopefully a hi res LCD, and fast AF. But how long will it take for lenses to appear and how will they be priced. I'm still leaning to Panasonic G2 at this stage, although new Oly firmware looks good.

I really wish companies wouldn't make choices that prioritize video over stills. If I wanted to do video, I would buy a dedicated video camera. Panasonic has the right idea with a 4/3 video camera I think. Though they missed the mark a bit by excluding in body IS with the GF-1 IMO.
I'm interested in one of these as long as Leica M adapters are available. Just so that I can shoot some video without adding a heavy/large piece of kit to the bag. Can keep it in a pocket with the body cap on until a video opportunity arises.

Based on the pictures we've seen, M adapters should be possible, the register appears to be shorter than m43.
Basically, the OP's assumption that the Sony IQ will be equivalent to the M8's sounds very ambitious. The M8 may not be perfect, but IQ is one of its strong suits. If indeed a Sony crop sensor mounted with a pancake lens looks that good, then Sony are to be congratulated for a major leap forward in IQ, and the NEX will wipe the floor with all M4/3 cams and many crop DSLRs. I'd love to see it (and buy one PDQ), but I have seen nothing so far that is tangible evidence that this is the case.
Just my $0.02.

Actually, against the M8, it's likely to come out ahead overall. Sony's current ~14MP bodies already outresolve the M8. What we've got here in the NEX's is almost assuredly a variant of the A550's sensor, tweaked for better continuous-feed performance. It's also likely the same basic sensor we'll see show up in the upcoming A700 successor.
What we can expect is excellent low ISO performance, but APS-C-level DR. High ISO will be very good but not class of the world (Expect better than the Nikon DX bodies or Pentax K-7, worse than the K-x or the 7D, much like the current A550).
The M8's IQ is pretty damned good at low ISO's for a 10MP sensor. But no AA filter is not enough of an advantage to make up for the MP difference. The M8 will probably retain better DR though, as that's one of its strong points although the A550 does pretty well there for APS-C.
Mawz, the actual resolution difference between 10MP and 14MP is in the Sony's favor, but not that huge. OTOH, pixel density is less on the M8, which is an asset for good IQ in the M8. The other issue, of course, is the lens, where, to the best of my knowledge, budget-priced Sony pancakes have not yet bested Leica primes (even less than state-of-the-art). As I said, I'd love to be wrong, and would buy the Sony immediately. But the specs do not point that way IMHO, unless there is something new at play.

Needless to say, the budget Sony lens will not be the choice for max IQ. People will be using either high-end A mount glass on the official adapter or high-end adapted glass for max IQ. I expect an M mount adapter to be available within a few weeks of shipment if it's possible (and I expect it to be possible).
And pixel density is not a real advantage for the M8 as its sensor is far older technology than the Sony sensor which is new as of last year. It does give something of a DR advantage, but the Sony 14MP CMOS sensor is already capable of 10.7 stops in RAW (the M8's at 11 or so stops)
Apart from the excellent M and ZM glass that could be probably adapted, it is rumoured that Zeiss is working on many lenses for this mount, especially that higher end bodies (including FF) will be introduced a bit later.

I'll take a FF one by the end of the year. That would be a sweet xmas present!
Hope they get that to market quickly.

If you wanna believe the rumors, a crop high end body will be released in September. The FF will have to wait until 2011. I am impatiantly waiting for it too.
Any sensor bigger than my µ4/3 system is welcome, and so is competition if only for the sake of it.
But, I think I'll skip this. What I really wait for is a FF LIVE camera to go with a small PEN style µ4/3. Those in betweens leave me a bit cold.
