p.1 #1 · Sony NEX as a Leica M8 alternative

I am thinking about a new wide-angle take everywhere camera and was considering an M8. I read that the Sony NEX-3 and NEX-5 will be announced on May 11th

http://asia.cnet.com/crave/2010/04/26/almost-official-sony-s-mirrorless-system-to-be-named-nex/

Do you think that this will be a decent alternative to the M8 with 21mm 2.8

The Sony has a 1.5x APS-C 14 megapixel ExmorHD sensor

http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/26/sony-gives-nex3-and-nex5-names-to-its-first-ultra-compact-interc/

The 16mm F2.8 IS pancake lens will have a 24mm equivalent FOV.

I am thinking that for much less money I could get a decent wide-angle solution with much higher image quality than the M8 in a smaller size but with similar background blur as the M8 w/ 21mm.

Any thoughts?

You'd really struggle to get any kind of background blur with a 16 or 21mm lens. Also, I dont know how a camera without a viewfinder could be considered as an alternative to a camera with a viewfinder and a rangefinder in it. The quality VF/RF and the ease in manual focusing it provides is one of the main reasons people buy leicas, its kind of an important feature. As for much higher image quality than the M8... no idea. But it does sound a bit ambitious.

A case of apples and oranges. Both will take very high quality photos but the operating way is so different. The NEX should be rather compared to the micro 4/3.

Good to read about aggressive pricing, but without a viewfinder it is dead in the water to me. Maybe the higher end model will have a VF of sorts. Also I feel that Sony should have gone with in body IS

good to see another manufacturer throw their hat into the ring. not terribly interested in the sony offering based on what i've read, but if it will help push further development of mirrorless/interchangeable digital camera systems, neato.

Why would that be more interesting? I welcome the larger sensor and apparently they will be competitive in pricing with the µ4/3 so it shouldn't matter in that regard.
The only reason it might be an issue is if the lenses produced are not very compact.
In theory though if they went a mostly prime route they should be able to make rangefinder esque sized lenses which would be amazing.

Hey, that sounds cool. It will be a very interesting year indeed.

I welcome a small camera with larger sensor than 4:3/µ4:3 and I have some hopes for the Sony camera. Other rumors state that NEX 3 and NEX 5 will differ in build quality/material with the NEX5 being better w metal/alloy/polycarbonate vs pc only in the NEX3.

Wish they would get on with releasing the stuff so some of yus fellas could act as guinea pigs on my behalf.

I find it confusing that Samsung has the NX and Sony NEX - are they similar/same mount?
I would not buy into Samsung cameras, they make some excellent products but they have never gotten a camera right yet.

very simple in fact, just get the subject in the first 1/3 of the focus range of the lens, works for all lenses.

I'm pretty sure Spyro knows how to get parts of the image out of focus. What he means is comparatively to a lens of longer focal length at working subject distances.

I'd like to see your theory put into practice on a 16mm f/8.0 Hologon though.

I would love a Leica M8, however I don't really want my street camera to cost more than my car and (with the M8) have worse high ISO performance than a $500 camera. The crop factor 1.3 vs 1.5x is similar. The Sony sensor should be one of the best high ISO APS sensors on the market.

No IBIS but a 16mm 2.8 "pancake" lens with IS. What's that about...
A pretty lame offering in my book.

@Empire: Why post that info here in a thread about cameras which won't be able to mount Samsung NX lenses?

I figure my priorities are out of order if my car is worth more than my camera.

So far, it looks to me like the lens mount diameter and registration distance should take M mount adapters, unlike the Samsung NX, but we'll see. While this wouldn't replace a rangefinder (or my A900,) I'd be pretty thrilled to have a tiny camera that I could mount a ZM 35 f2 on (standard lens.) Even better, Sony making a native Zeiss standard lens for the camera would be perfect for me. I normally wouldn't be super excited about a camera with no VF and all touchscreen controls, but I'm coming around a bit to the idea of it. There is some kind of new data port/connector on the top of the camera, so there could be VF options in the future.

p.s. apparently, Empire mixed up the Samsung and Sony line above.

My bad, yes I did mix up Sony and Samsung. I was reading stories about both at the same time and NX is easy to mistake for NEX.

Sorry!

I'm skeptical about the VF. Notice in the picture above how the data port door opens up towards the user and leans against the back of the flash. It seems like it would be clunky or in the way with a VF. Granted, maybe that door is removable??
