p.7 #1 · Mark IV Firmware 1.0.6 problems

The good thing (if there is one) is that from most of your previous uses with the 1d4 and the earlier F/W it would seem that the camera CAN do things right unlike the early mk3 issue. so it should not take too much to get things back to being good again should it.
What may be slightly harder is getting Canon to acknowledge the issue in the first place

@ Frank - looks like camera shake unless you were up in the 1/2500 shutter speed range.

Frank - to me that looks as if you're shooting through a window, or suffering from heat shimmer due to air/lens temperature differences.

I agree & I suspect that firmware version 1.0.4 re-badged as 1.0.7 will appear very soon.

My Mark IV works fine with 300/2.8L IS, but need +6 MA..

All the following shot are @F/2.8, handheld, shot in JPG, standard picture style, cropped and resized in PS, no sharpening.

It's a dull day here today, everything looks low contrast...

I tried both 1.04 and 1.06, see no difference, only thing I noticed is on three Mark IV bodies I have tested, all need some +MA, otherwise way front focusing, not a good sign...

But I may need to send my 300/2.8L IS to Canon for a check up...

I have stuck with 1.0.4 on mine and have not encountered any issues so far & no + or - MA required with my 400/2.8 IS. In fact, I was amazed just how sharp the jpegs were straight out of the camera.

Only been one one shoot with it though so time will tell.

SNIP

Mine got here Monday, yesterday, with1.06. I had posted earlier I would not upgrade from 1.04 till this stuff was resolved; but guess not.

It has been rainy and clouded and very poor light here so my tests have been rather limited, but the thing seems to work with my 500/f4, 70-200/2.8, 85/1.8, and it blew me away with the sharpness on my 16-35II which was delivered this afternoon. All stock settings so far.

I wish the rain would quit so I could go to the park and shoot some sea gulls and figure this thing out.

Mine came with the new firmware installed. Works great with the 600mm with no MA. I have not tried it on the 500mm yet.

Rob,

Have you tried on dynamic subjects yet?

Again, I was reviewing the images from last Sunday and out of 400+ shots I may have 20-30 usable, I have entire sequences out of focus…… sorry Canon but this is unacceptable

Sorry to hear this Matt, that is pretty bad. Hope they weren't eagle shots and hope it all works out.

Sorry I have not. I am hoping this weekend. As you can see the bird is cold and it was fairly windy, so the branches where moving a bit. The weather has not been with me since I received it. I will post here again with results. Good or bad

Here's a sample from last week. I'm standing on a wet rock in about a force 7 and this guy is overpowered with a 6.6. He is moving left to right across the frame & towards the camera at around 28 / 30 knots. If all the shots from my MkIV turn out as sharp as this, I'll be a happy camper.

Force 7 with a 6.6 - Well he's bigger balls than I ever had Mind its been 3 years since I've got out so I guess gear has got that much better + I've put on more than a few pounds so I could probably have joined him.
(note to self. Must start that diet. starting to approach Whitey size without the Height or the speed)

He's a speedsailor so overpowered is normal. In fact, I'm pretty sure 6.0 is his smallest sail! Plus, he's 6'8" and around 17 stone without a weight jacket so he can hold a big rig.

I haven't seen Dave for a while but I'm pretty sure he's lost weight. I have some great shots of him in Fuerte & Tarifa from back in the 80's & 90's. There's one of him & Harty trying to bump start a half submerged car in the lagoon at Sotavento that has been published quite a few times.

p.7 #16 · Mark IV Firmware 1.0.6 problems

Yesterday my new MK IV arrived. After reading various posts above I decided I wouldn't upgrade the firmware until it was resolved. Unfortunately, I found that it already had been upgraded to 1.0.6.

I did some testing with the new camera today. Around noon in very overcast skies, shot some geese in flight, using my 600mm f/4 IS. Later in the afternoon, shots of our dogs both standing still and panning them while they were running at full speed, using the 70-200 f/2.8 IS.

I used both shutter priority and aperture priority, and kept the shutter speed quite fast to capture the action. Most of my shots with the 70-200 were at around 3.2, with ISO 400. Sunlight was a bit harsh. I shot both into the sun, and with the sun at my back.

The noon shots of the geese were with the standard focus settings. In the afternoon I tried the III.8.2 setup, hoping for a little more accurate focus as tracking wouldn't be that difficult.

The noon shots were in S RAW, and the ones in the late afternoon were in the largest RAW setting.

When I looked at the results on my big monitor I was really surprised and disappointed. I couldn't believe how many of the images were soft. I knew that I wasn't allowing the camera a lot of latitude in depth of field because of shooting so wide open, but figured that would be the best test of the autofocus capability. I also shot at very high shutter speed so that motion blur wouldn't be an issue.

Last week, using one of those same lenses (the 70-200) on my 1D Mark III, the images were consistently tack sharp. Although the light was a little different, it was still a fast moving target (jumping dog), with very shallow DOF.

I'm going to test more settings and conditions, but to say that I'm quite concerned would be a huge understatement.

Unfortunately I have many more in different circumstances that are also OOF. I never even looked at them until this evening, never suspecting there could be an issue. I then mounted the lens/camera on a tripod and brought up a focusing target, and the problem is the same. My 1Ds III handled it no problem, the Mark IV was out - that's it for me. Why would I fool with that?

PS - the biggest problem for me is that it appears to be selective - not everyone has a problem. But I wrote on this board just over a week ago that I felt the shortage of cameras indicated there was an issue somewhere and perhaps this vindicates that statement.

Not a 1d4 pix, not a digital pix, but it is me, shot by one of my homies with my old Nikonos VI, which at least has a VI in the name of the camera.
