I can't see anything in sharp in your photo, which makes me wonder if it is not a diffraction problem at f/16, rather than a front or back focus problem. Have you tried at larger apertures and got better results ?

I have not tried yet Alan. Thanks...I will try to "reset" to default settings as suggested 1st. I am trying not to overreact to this and make sure I am not the cause of the problem. But the bird OOF was taken as stated and the 1DsMKIII and 50D were dead on no MA no nothing. CP AF only

Hi guys, I reset the custom functions, which is accessed from the custom functions menu, and is called "Clear all Custom Func". I made a list of what I had set prior to clearing them effectively back to factory settings. In addition, I also "Cleared all Camera Settings", which again is accessed through the menu icons. Pages 204 and 53 of the manual may help.
I turned the camera off and took the battery out, then battery back in turned it back on and reset the camera back to where I wanted it. 500f4 attached AI servo tracking a car, focus locked no problem, repeated with 600f4 again no problem. I'll do more testing tomorrow but I can say I am not seeing any of the hunting I did.

I wonder how this applies to cameras that arrive with the new firmware already installed and the settings already at default?

Mine arrived with the newest firmware. Initial tests with al my lenses including the 600 f/4 IS are fantastic! This body is great. I did have to +3 MA my 85LmkII. But preliminary tests with the long lens in servo was fine. I will look for some very demanding situations in the next few days.
Are you presenting this gull image as an "oof" shot or a "keeper"? If the latter, then you have some serious problems with your 1D4 and/or lenses and with your post-processing.
Colin
Sorry about my humor impaired post of an obligatory sea gull pix. Next time I will try and make a funnier post.
