We'll time to level my hopes out for a while........booo .

I can't believe they say this on their site.(I know what they're trying to say, but, this way, sheesh.......)

"Of course it may not be possible to remove all moiré in all cases, but in general an overall clean, sharp image with slight moiré is preferred over a soft focus image."

Sounds they're comparing to the 1D mk2.

Simon;

Shame on you....a soft picture with no moiré is still better then the Mark II.

Best,
James

Sectarian,

I don't mean to sound suspicious, but any chance of getting the shirt and tie image posted with the EXIF header intact?

The subjects in this image did not sign a model release so I am not in a position to post the entire image. Here's a cropped version, with the EXIF header intact.

I don't know what you are suspicious of, didn't you follow the link to Nikons tech support site? The moire shown in their own example is exactly the same.

Anyhow I've replaced the file with a copy that includes the EXIF header.

gah, I've taken several pics of stuff like my camera bag(s), bed sheets/pillow cases and none of them have displayed what I've seen in this thread.

so that leads me to believe that someone got a dud for a camera. or maybe some cameras show moire FAR more than others do. (who knows...)

either that or he just has bad luck cuz I'm tickled pink with my recently purchased D70.

OK believe what you want. If true, someone should tell Nikon, don't you think?

From the last page, in case you missed it: http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=7uNWUD7h&p_lva=&p_faqid=9544&p_created=1080656943&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1tb2lyZSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPTMmcF9wcm9kX2x2bDE9MTkmcF9wcm9kX2x2bDI9NTYmcF9jYXRfbHZsMT1_YW55fiZwX3NvcnRfYnk9ZGZsdCZwX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=

I heard there's a "guideline" on dpreview letting people to reproduce these funky stuff ... including CCD blooming, color shift etc. I did a brief search but didn't find it.

Ozzie - why don't you send us a link to your website or some of your photographs so we can see the type of images you shoot - that way we can judge how much emphasis to place on your comments. I haven't seen any of your posts so I have no clue if you are quoting from personal experience or simply quoting others. I have seen Sectarian's photographs over the last year or so and place substantial credibility with his critical eye.

Duncan

I just got my D70 and I've only "fiddled" with it here and there so I havent really had a chance to upload anything yet.

But please be fair warned and I will say this, I'm anything but a professional photographer so if someone's gonna need to believe the word of a pro vs. a newb like myself then so be it. I dont claim to be a pro simply because I'm not.

Again, I'm basing my previous words on pics that I took earlier but have since then deleted them because (again) I was just fiddling around. But I'll try to take some more pics in a little while.

Lets nip this argument in the bud. The first thing I did when I received the D70 was to go on a long walk and shoot a wide variety of subjects that I thought would create moire. I saw none. I felt good enough to use the camera on a real shoot; a series of interiors on a yacht.

There were a few incidences of moire, not enough to be a cause for concern... or so I thought. When moire does occur on the D70 it is a pretty bad sight, and tougher to fix than moire seen on other cameras.

You may never experience it with the subjects you shoot, and that's fine. No need to take offense, I'm just pointing out that there is quite a bit of evidence out there that it is a characteristic of the camera, not just a few bad apples, and if the subjects one shoots are the types that are moire prone, the D70 is not the best camera. Do some research and you'll see that mine is not an isolated incident.

Where is the full-size example ?? We can't judge moire on a down-sized version for we have no idea how you down-sized it.

Only two down-sized versions of each example, and since we have no idea how the images were down-sized, we can make NO assumptions or conclusions about the D70 and moire from just these images. And it would be best to compare the same subject taken with another camera to come to any conclusion.

Thanks for posting the image w/EXIF headers. BTW the time/date on your camera is off......

I had done some research and all of the images posted (here and at another site) were lacking the EXIF headers. I suppose I just did not want to hear that my future "perfect" DSLR had problems. Perhaps they will be fixed when I finally pull the trigger.

I believe the image posted is a 1:1 crop from the original ... it's not a downsized sample.

Gee this is too bad Mark. Sorry for the trouble it's put you through. At least you found out while you can still take it back. It's dissapointing to me too - I was looking forward to getting one of these in the future. Just ordered the D2H today. Glad I didn't get the D70.
Best wishes with your replacement camera -

Mark this is sad news indeed. I might have expected this with a CMOS sensor, but from a CCD sensor I am somewhat dismayed. Although we may feel that the Professional lines are the state of the art for digital cameras and big ticket items, this line of prosumer camera is where the money is at. For Nikon as well as us, I certainly hope that their engineering problems can be very quickly resolved. With a bit of irony I have heard that Kodak has done some software development for Nikon.
