Here is my latest one from this morning at Bolsa Chica using a 100-400mm lens. This one was not cropped at all; the framing was just like captured. Bobby, Conrad (he came down from the Bay Area ), Ken, Thang, another Josh plus several others were there, as well. Conrad The feeding time was not too "frenzy" this morning but we had a good time nonetheless.

Great capture Joshua!

Thanks, Dennis. I got lucky with framing and timing on that one.

Thanks, Aravind. I am ready for Bosque; we are leaving tomorrow to hook up with Will on Tuesday. Sorry for the change of plan there; I will be there a little earlier than I originally planned as I am trying to catch the fullmoon while there. Since we are driving (almost 800 miles one way, ouch ), we will take plenty of gear to get us covered. I will keep you updated on what's going on there though. Enjoy your Bosque trip as well.

I'm jealous of everyone going to Bosque In Oklahoma, if I find one bird in a day that's not brown and inconspicuous, it's a big deal.

I need some help trying to figure out whether my Macbook positioning is providing an accurate image as far as viewing is concerned. My 27 iMac replacement is still not ready to ship from Shanghai so I am using my Macbook and PS Elements to PP my images. I have no idea my setting are right due to the screen position. Can someone just look at this and let me know if the levels are halfway close to reasonable.

7D and 400mm f/5.6

John, I'm "colorblind" so I won't comment on your PP , but one tip for laptop screen positioning: You probably want to calibrate (whether with an instrument, or just your eye and software) your screen when you are looking at it dead on at a perpendicular (i.e., "normal") angle. Presuming your Macbook screen is glossy (they all are, right?), you can use retroreflection to tell exactly where on your screen your eye is positioned in front of it perpendicular by looking for your reflection. (If you need to, shine a light on your face momentarily with a dark image on the screen, and look right the reflection of your own eye.)

One of the unsung benefits of glossy screens. Of course, your IPS-panel iMac won't be nearly so angle critical - enjoy it!

Anil, it looks like you and your 7D are bonding well. Are you feeling more comfortable with it?

Thanks for the advice. I did calibrate using the Settings but did it at an angle since true perpendicular is not really a good working angle for me. So I guess I will just have to set the same angle every time I use it.

BTW this Macbook 13" has a matte screen and does not reflect like the glossy 24" I had and the new 27" I had before the HD died on the 5th day of ownership. PSE is nice but I sure do miss all my other programs on the iMac.

@Andy .. much better now that I know what my weakness is (7D RAW and DPP) and am temporarily shooting JPEG with the standard setting. I need to up my DPP skills. Been using ACR for years now. Will be taking it to Florida for 9 days, during the Christmas break, and want to get as comfortable as I can with it before then.

@John .. Apple released a Macbook with Matte screen Is that a MB or a MBP?

Did you burn in the highlights on the neck of #1? It looks bad to my eye though a non photog might not notice it that much. I might suggest some careful selective cloning instead.

Otherwise the levels look fine.

You are right... it is a glossy screen. I guess because of the angle I was not seeing any reflections. Don't really use it that much except when traveling.

Yeah... I fooled with the dodge tool and did not do a very good job. I use Nik Viveza to deal with blown areas on the iMac. I had never thought of using cloning tool for that... thanks for the tipi

Lots of really nice shots....

Would anyone mind posting a couple ISO 800 and above shots? Thinking this would be a nice camera to pair with the 5D2.

Thanks!

If you guys want 7D RAWs shot at different ISO's, I can shoot em and upload them to my web server and you guys can download and process it the best you can. I suck at using DPP, apparently. Can also take shots at all ISOs on my 30D and upload them too. In about 30 mins .. battery's charging.

That would be great... I'm curious to see how well the 7D handles noise from 800 on up... My shooting partner has the 5D2... mine is on the way(hurry up USPS) and I'm looking to add a second body as backup. I need something that can track a moving subject. I have the 5D now... it does everything great...but...moving subjects(little kids are the worst...ROFL)

So... if the higher ISO files look good... I will bite the bullet and pick up the 7D. From what I have been reading... for the most part... people are loving the new camera.

Thanks for the help.

Here are 2 sets of full-sized JPEGs from 7D .. no post-processing applied For those who haven't used Smugmug .. please check the toolbar at the top .. you can view different sizes (O = original), click on Show Details and then Info for EXIF. Hope this helps. Will upload more sets soon. Sorry for the boring subject. It's freaking cold outside and I don't want to be outside testing ISOs right now.
