Two more ducks from my 7D/400mm day. I am anxiously awaiting my 2nd 27" Quad Core i7 iMac from Apple (replacement...first one was basically DOA with a failed HD) so I can PP and see the entire image. These look pretty good on my 13" Macbook and I love the detail. Shot large jpeg and cropped these probably about 50% or a little more.

Thank you very much Saaketham for taking the time to shoot these. I'm thinking with a little noise reduction... ISO 1600/2000 would be very usable... even the higher ISOs..

Thank you again!

You're welcome .. if you need any more shots with specific settings or the lenses I have (only 3 now) .. please feel free to ask. Here're some I took just now ... it was really really windy and cold and miserable, but these guys braved all that and we got a few decent shots. Gave up after just 30 mins because their dog was going crazy, running after people at the park and so on.

Thanks for sharing those basketball shots NCAndy - I've found them to be useful, seeing how clear/clean the shots look.

Glad they helped.

FYI, there is very little noise reduction used in Lightroom. The first one has 16 Luminance/25 Color and the second has 19/25. So pretty minimal. These were available light obviously, no strobes. Both images have very slight adjustments to contrast and some sharpening, resizing for the web converted from Raw.

NCAndy,

What were your AF settings?
Were you using center pt. only AF or center pt plus surrounding pts?

Just one with 7D and EF 500/4.5L, hand held.

I've been experimenting with both. At this game I switched between the two settings. I think for basketball I prefer a single point over a point plus expansion. It seems I get more consistent results with one point. I have the 7D set to different focus points depending whether I use landscape or portrait orientation. Neither is set to the center point though. I have also been trying out different tracking speed settings and used slow/med and med. I'm still undecided. I'm beginning to think faster is better for basketball.

.... if you like to see true quality of digital image then print it on let’s say Epson 3880 using with exceptional quality paper and all in calibrated environment.

Then you will see what your camera is all about.

My initial tests show me, that Canon 7D is great gear in it’s own category ! Period.

More nice shots, everyone. NCAndy, the colors in your B-ball shots are great, as are the colors in beauport's Thanksgiving meal picture.

ruhikant-nice capture!

More than "nice", I'd say. The little falcon is in full-tilt flight and Ruhikant got him in an almost horizontal perspective which is great. The sharpness is pretty good and so are the colours/exposure. No two ways about it, the man knows how to shoot the fastest of BIF.

Edit: I've just realized 500 f/4.5L was used handheld which is a bit of a mixed blessing: the lens is not overly heavy and has excellent IQ, however, one must overcome two handicaps for this kinda shooting: somewhat sluggish AF and no IS.

I wish my wife would somehow get on here and block fredmiranda from me.

I'm so stinking close to ordering one.

Thanks Peter, I am still struggling with ef 500/4.5L for the reasons you mention above (mind you with such high density sensor in 7D, any flaw in the technique will show up easily) . Yes, this little one is really fast and not easily approachable, that's why my 400L was too short.

Ruhikant, I guess "nice capture!" really doesn't come close to doing this shot justice. It really is an outstanding shot, especially considering how quickly those little guys move and considering the fact that ruhikant was handholding that sizable lens. Even without considering any of that it's an excellent shot. I hope you can post more.

Andy
