the overall pic, looks great to a non-bird guy like me, I can see peeling paint on door from a 1000 yards with the 7D, so I am not complaining, love the camera, just thought I would try a few Pelicans since they were around this morning at the Salton Sea where I was shooting landscapes and textures, my usual subject matter.
Pelicans to me are one of the easiest, if not the easiest to shoot IF so thats a good subject to start with. You mentioned he just flew through the scene so I have to ask what focus mode you used. Its very possible if you had zone AF or full AF that the camera locked focus on the birds reflection in the water. You should be able to tell.

I was in ai servo with expansion points. I am totally unpracticed in birds. I didn't try tracking the bird and the 100-300L is a slow focuser anyways. Since this weekend was my first try with the 100-300, I also noticed it needs MA on static subjects, seems a bit off. Will try birds again, also will bring a monopod, it takes practice to get sharp bif shots.

Posted in another thread: Here's a shot of the recent Moon with a 7D and the 18-200mm IS lens at 200mm, 1/800, ISO 200, f/7.1.

This is a 100% view. Processed in DPP with no lens/noise correction applied and sharpening is at 1 (no other sharpening). I find the detail with such a lens and the 7D quite acceptable.

I hope you did not take my comment about pelicans being easy as an insult to your shot, it was not meant that way at all. I meant more that they are good subjects to work with for BIF... ie large, usually gliding and even when not gliding they move slowly.
Not tracking the bird even at your shutter speed could very well have impact on the outcome. Since you were not tracking, I suggest looking at the water below. Since you were not tracking, you should be able to see a spot on the water that is noticably sharper than any other part of the image.

The scary thing is this was at 420mm (300+1.4) with a 1.6x crop camera from like 5' away and it still doesn't even fill the frame (which in this case is ok since I like the bracnh pattern and surround space in this case, but.... I don't know how the bird people get filled frames all the time.... this was a common and relatively tame type of bird unlike most. Do they tie them down? Get their feet stuck with peanut butter? Are they bird whisperers?)

No insult taken, hey, its the first time I am trying any BIF. I am fully expecting to NOT have a sharp shot, the 7D is great, but I know that technique is hugely important, and I have almost no BIF experience. The only way to learn is to get out and shoot, evaluate and shoot some more.
plus my old 100-300L needs some MA, even tripod shots of static subjects are a little bit off.

Yes from that shot assuming its not cropped already, I would expect you should be able to do a 100% or near 100% portrait crop of the head and post it as an image.
