I took the 7D to the kart track again today, luckily there were a couple guys out there ripping around, so I could get a feel for the AF. Overall I'm pleased with it, and I think the camera performs right about where I hoped it would, which is pretty much halfway between the 50D and 1D2. I used the settings that are floating around here, but never really got around to thoroughly testing the stock settings, so I can't compare.

I have been tossing around which to choose; a 7D or a used M3 to replace one of my bodies in my 50d -1dm2 combo I use now. I was hoping it would outperform both.

Though there are some great pics in this thread, this is hardly high praise for your camera choice. No?

That's funny, I bought this to replace my 50D/1D2 combo. I think it's praise, the lenses don't 'snap' into focus like with the 1D2, but with the same(ish) puny battery, I didn't expect it to. The keeper rate wile drop a bit, but so far it doesn't look like it will be to a disappointing level. I don't know about you guys, but my 1D2 wasn't hugely successful at keeping up in bursts while fast objects were moving towards you. In a five shot burst I might catch the first two or three, but then the subject would fall out of the dof and not return for the remaining burst. Shooting several bursts of karts yesterday in this type of situation, it would catch a couple, loose one or two, and than catch a couple. I was actually pretty happy with that. I think the AF will be good enough, and the camera is better in pretty much every other aspect.

Been a long time since I've posted, but I'm loving my recently acquired 7D. Some awesome shots in this thread, thanks for sharing. Here's a small contribution from moi!

Ok thanks gotcha. tend to agree with you reagrding the 1dm2. It is very hit and miss but I depend on it for low ISO sports work, while using the 50d for 3200.

Your kart pics look great and are nice examples of the 7d's ability.

So now the 1d2 AF is "very hit and miss"?

Let's just assume it's an exaggeration. The 1D2 is an excellent camera, and if someone chooses to buy something else because one person on the internet says it's not perfect six years after its release date, then so be it.

While I've never gotten to shoot a 1D2, I have certainly been having EXCELLENT results with my 7D in AI Servo mode, whether with my 70-200 2.8L or 17-55 2.8. With both of them, I find the camera is tracking extremely well, even through extended bursts of 10-15 shots. I haven't even had to do any micro-adjustments for either lens; am I lucky or did Canon really get it right? Doesn't matter to me.....I love it.

Hey, the below is not supposed to indicate anything about the 7D, I absolutely love the camera. But this is a jpeg I shot *this is the first BIF I have ever taken, ever with any body* 100% crop, the bird is tiny in the overall frame, handheld, an old 100-300L, slow (but sharp on stationary subjects). This is from someone with no bird experience whatsoever.

Again, I am happy, considering I have never done this ever before with non-IS glass not really suited to the subject matter, and this can be sharpened up, I am sure. It is really, really sharp in the context of the whole photo.

Hey, I know absolutely nothing about birds, should I even be expected to get a sharp image of a BIF at 1/1250? (and I was not panning with the motion of the bird at all, it just flew through the frame)

the overall pic, looks great to a non-bird guy like me, I can see peeling paint on door from a 1000 yards with the 7D, so I am not complaining, love the camera, just thought I would try a few Pelicans since they were around this morning at the Salton Sea where I was shooting landscapes and textures, my usual subject matter.

The AI Servo on 7D is excellent so shooting action in sequence is pretty much given

The Supercross last night was the big test for me, the camera did great. At fist I was thinking that I might save up for a 1d3, but that's just not necessary for my uses.
