Also, maybe I'm just an idiot for not putting two and two together, but check this:
AF system Troubled since its inception, numerous aspects of the 45-point AF system in the EOS-1D Mark III have been reworked for the EOS-1D Mark IV. Canon has made changes to both the hardware components responsible for AF as well as the algorithms that govern the AF system's behaviour. There are feature changes too, such as the ability to manually select from all 45 points individually (the EOS-1D Mark III limits manual selection to a maximum of 19 points).
So basically they just upgraded the old AF. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, but it seemed like a sure thing that they were gonna base the AF system off the 7D's. Instead it just looks like they incorporated some of the 7D's AF features into a revamped version of the MkIII's.
I'm sure it will be a smokin' focusing camera, but I just thought that was interesting vs. what everyone was expecting.

The sample pictures on Canon Inc's site look disappointing...again. I don't understand why they can't just shoot a sharp image for once that isn't blurred from NR, or OOF or whatever
Which photo did you not like? I thought they were pretty impressive in terms of low noise and did not see any NR artifacts.
If you look at the ISO 3200 shot, you can see from the background that it has been whacked with NR (tell tale signs of no chroma, blurry luminance noise)
The other shots aren't very sharp, though ISO 400 is impressively clean in the backgrounds. Unclear what NR they used, but if it had no NR, it would be better than the 5D2 (unlikely to be NR free though imo)
ISO 3200 kinda just looks like the 5D2...seems about right though since the two have similar pixel densities

Good decision. Mark 4 is a pro camera. Most of the people who fell for the 5D2 hysteria and the Full Frame hype would be over their heads with it.
! It's a camera, not a space shuttle. Not that complicated, folks.

the 5D2 has the same pixel pitch as the 20D/30D 156/mm 6.4 µ
the 1D4 has the same pixel pitch as the 40D 175/mm 5.7 µ
I am acually happy that the camera is not a very major upgrade. Besides the resolution, I think there is nothing that would catch my interest to upgrade to this one from 1d3. Also, as far as resolution is concerned, for the wedding work I do, the 10mp 1d3 is quite enough, and for the higher resolution stuff, I use the 1ds III.
Why am I happy? Because the difference is not that huge, and this means the prices for the 1d III will not drop so hard. If this camera would have been a Full-Frame with all the specs equal, I would have felt a bit dumb for buying 2 1d mk IIIs about 9 months ago and not waiting for this. My only "problem" is the 1.3 crop factor of the 1d series. I would have loved to have all three bodies full-frames, but I could not afford to buy 3 1ds IIIs si I bought one and two 1d IIIs (the 5D / 5D II were out of question due to the poor AF). Having the 1d IV with still the same 1.3 crop makes me feel good about the 1d III purchase and I now am definitely going to happily keep the mk IIIs for at least another 3 years until the next big thing will come from Canon.
And regarding the mk IV itself, I think it is a good step up to have all AF sensors cross-type. The high ISO ... I seriously doubt that anything above ISO 12800 would be really usable for anything serious (probably some 4x6 inch prints would look decent at 25600 or more, but I would not use something like that). I think that the H2 and H3 are really just marketing gimmiks.
Looks like we will get stitched up over here. US price $4999, UK pre-order price from Warehouse express £4499. I don't know where they get their exchange rates from.
