The translation gets one sequence wrong, it should be:

"My experience with other DSLR cameras is that the focus easily skip to the front wing when it comes near the selected focus - in this case, the eye of a goose. . To my great delight, it kept focus to where I wanted during the whole "flapping" sequence, which has not been the standard in similar situations before."

The google translation sais this performance has been standard before, but in norwegian he clealy says it has not.

It is difficult to translate the norweigain modifier "nok", but I think "eventually" or "probably" will do, and we can quote him on:

"This is eventually the camera with the best AF system that I've tried (including 1D/1DS MarkIII)"

Alundeb, thanks for the translation.
I believe that I speak in the name of us all when I say it is very appreciated!

When the 50d was announced, canon also gave a pre-production model to a well-known bird-photog who claimed that in his tests he found the 50d's AF to be faster for birding than his 1DIII.
I had the pleasure of owning a 1DMIII. One of the firsts my dealer received (he is one of the biggest dealers in Europe), and it was never serviced.
Let me tell you that in terms of AF, MY previous 1DMIII wipes the floor with MY current 50d...

So I'm afraid I'm a little skeptical on this one...
Hope it's true though, since I will most likely buy one!
But I will have to wait and see...

And don't get me started on canon's initial claims of the 50d high iso performance...
Though I must admit that so far I am really impressed with the initial 7d pics.
The initial 50d high iso pics were not very good, and these are.

So fingers crossed!

Arthur Morris still feels his 50D in some situations tracks as good as or better than his Mark 3 (and he is a guy who really likes his 1D3 too). There is another guy on BPN that agrees with him. Not agreeing with them or anything but just adding a couple more data points.

That was Brutus Östling, Fraga - he's good.

The 50D does have very fast AF (40D too) but there's a lack of control and configurability in those bodies - even "little" things in the Mk III like the ability to slow down the AF before it starts seeking again (so that it doesn't instantly get distracted by a busy background) will make a big difference, and of course the 7D has that ability too - and a dedicated AF processor, which the xxD bodies lack.

Oh yeah - thanks, Alundeb.

Actually, "probably" makes perfect sense in that sentence.

well it sort of came across anyway with the first part of the sentence, so I read it properly to begin with, but it doesn't hurt to have it clarified just in case it had been the first part it had mis-translated and not the last part.

As for the "eventually" or "probably" PLEASE let it NOT be "eventually"! Haha we don't need another year long saga, ala Mk3, of mirror fixes and all!

I'm sure it should be translated as "probably".... i hope .

anyway, this guy, at least, certainly seems to know what he is doing unlike many of the others shooting pre-pro samples. nice samples.

I wonder what's up with this [new] silver ring around the rear wheel... I don't see any reason/usage for it. Any ideas?

Yeah, I well remember that. It proved to be a lot of crap.
I have better feel from how this guy is talking though, of course it remains to be seen.

Well, I've taken the plunge and pre-ordered. Now, the likely 4-6 week wait.

Not to be picky, but who cares if he had NR ON or OFF? The results speak for themselves - there appears to be plenty of detail with low noise, and no banding. I am pretty sure I can live with that. If it was accomplished in-camera (or during raw import) without having to go through noiseninja or neatimage I am actually happier, as it saves me a step in post.

It's all about the final image, isn't it?

It is about the final image... but also how you have come to that final image

We all know the 50D files looked better in DPP than in ACR/LR. Since I use ACR/LR, I am more concerned how the 7D RAW files will hold up in this software than in DPP.

I am actually wondering if this camera would be performing as good as my 5D up to ISO 800. If what some people are saying about it is true and it can keep up with just 1/2 stop disadvantage against 5D "classic" I think I'm going to sell my 5D very soon.

IF AF is so good and ISO performance too, I think I'm going to enjoy coming back to crop sensor and wait for new stuff to come.

Things I'm missing in my 5D while I wish to have the same form factor:
1-Great AF with the outer points and more frame coverage.
2-Good Screen
3-Live view
4-AF micro adjust
5-Level
6-Some extra reach for macro work
7-100% viewfinder
8-ISO reading in the viewfinder
9-Custom modes
10-greater FPS. I would have enough with 5 FPS.
11-Resolution for cropping/framing even more. (Sometimes I suck at framing )
12-Less Shutter lag delay
13-OK...video will come handy too

Now, if the 7D was APS-H or Full Frame... what a dream camera... (3D?)
