This is exciting! I wish it wasn't a 1.6 crop, but it still should be good... In reference to the 1D3... I tried to get one from Badger, and missed out... I talked to them in person and they said (quoting from email here)
"Sorry the group of 1D MKIII cameras we had at a special price are sold out. We will not be receiving more until the new version comes out next month"
For the 1D IV wishers, I don't know what it means, just thought I'd throw it out there...

People don't like this because they did it too late and everyone have decided to move to FF and there is only one option the $2600 5D2.

well i do agree it is a little late and at this time i would maybe prefer them to do it at the 3D level, but i guess they cant do that until they get the next 1 series duo out first
i woudl've loved it earlier when I still had easy access to top sports, but oh well, tha's just my situation and if I am lucky I may still get some occasional access.
but hey at least is does appear to finally be here, which is great IMO
top AF is something has been sorely missed (at least by those shooting upper level sports and action a lot; athough even one shot the non-1series can be pretty dicey at times shooting wide open)

I have a 5D2 myself. But fact is the fps, shutter, mirror feel closer to a rebel than to a 50D. I don't see what is so crazy about saying that. And I sold my 50D so I'm not saying I like the 50D or a Rebel better. Just that the 5 series are pretty close to the cheap FF that people always say they want and are, in a practical if not physical body housing stance, more like FF Rebels than FF 50Ds (aside from teh AF which is better than rebel).
Having owned a couple of different Rebels as well as the 40D (and 30D and 10D), I would classify it with the XXD in most ways. True, the 40D was a speed demon compared to the 5D, but in terms of feel, build, and tactile operation, the Rebels are/were a completely different animal. I guess that the frame rate and blackout timing might be similar between the 5 and the Rebels, but I never really noticed. And while the 40 had better peripheral AF points, my 5D consistently outperformed the 40 in Servo mode.
I wasn't really arguing with your points so much as I was pointing out that there are a number of posters here that get downright nasty about their distaste for the 5-series, and for those that would buy them. Like yourself, I shoot with a 5D2 and a 5D. And like most people, I don't enjoy being called an "idiot" or some such thing for making that purchasing choice. So when you asked why people got so defensive about the 5D, I immediately thought of the more offensive among us that might have, at times, provoked the defensive response.

"Too late" for what? Was there something you urgently had to shoot that only a "Canon D300" would be able to photograph?
I doubt it...
I'll tell you, I wasn't taken in by the hype surrounding the D300, and - guess what? - it does nothing the 40D can't do just as well, and sometimes better.
Besides, many (and I mean many) potential D300/40D/50D buyers have absolutely zero interest in FF.

I was focusing more on the practical aspects of fps/mirror etc. than body feel and look.
(although I guess a cramp in your hand can be a practical aspect )

Wonder if the 1-series will still be a duo or if Canon might consolidate the line into a single, fast full frame model...
Shouldn't that be "defective optics"
The 70-300 DO IS was the softest Canon lens I ever owned and certainly nowhere near L quality
Niall
I love these anti-DO posts. It's funny but in the last 5 years I've come to a conclusion on the 70-300 DO.... This lens gets 90% of its bashing from a) those that have never used it, b) those that never understood how to use it or why Canon developed it, and c) those that can't afford it so they trash it to make themselves feel better because they bought the consumer version.
Is it 70-200 sharp? Nope. could it be sharper? Yup. Is there any lens that comes close to it for features, size, and usability? Not a chance..The DO is not designed as an amateur lens....
