"Too late" for what? Was there something you urgently had to shoot that only a "Canon D300" would be able to photograph?
I doubt it...
I'll tell you, I wasn't taken in by the hype surrounding the D300, and - guess what? - it does nothing the 40D can't do just as well, and sometimes better.
Besides, many (and I mean many) potential D300/40D/50D buyers have absolutely zero interest in FF.
Hey keithreeder! I don't know what is your problem. You don't have to be too defensive.
The fact is D300 was announced 23-Aug-07 according DP Review, around the same time as Canon 40D. That makes Canon two years later then Nikon. A lot of people came over from the Nikon camp to Canon when Rebel, 10D and 20D were kicking some Nikon's asses. I think many of them went back to Nikon because of their D300 offering. When you look at 40D and D300, it is easy to say D300 is a much feature rich and better overall camera, however, D300 is a more expensive camera. At the time 5D was around, which is a great FF, however its AF and many features are pretty much a 20D, for the price, a lot of people went with the Nikon DX route instead. The last wedding I was at I saw at least 3 D300 and maybe one 5D or could be a 5D2. I think I was the only one using a Canon, a couple of years ago, I think in the same kinda of event, I would see many many Canon and maybe one Nikon out of all. Time to market is everything, people don't wait for something to happen, they buy what the best available despite taking a loss at their lens investment. If you are happy with your APS-C camera, then it probably suit your need. My 20D was as good as I want my camera to be until I have to shoot wedding for money. If you head over to the wedding forum, everyone will tell you FF gives better images especially at high ISO. All of the wedding photographers would love to have either a 5D, 5D2, D700, D3, D3X, 1D3, 1DsII or 1DsII as their tool, that is why I said a lot of people, I don't mean the whole population in this planet earth. Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "everyone", as apparently you are not interested in FF. Major of people would be fine with APS-C in their DSLRs, and many of them create just as good photos in more desirable light conditions. However, if FF is cheaper, I am sure everyone will dump their APS-C DSLRs and make the move, this is just cold hard reality. I was one of the guys once said "film is better than digital and we have no interest in digital" about 6, 7 or 8 years ago, and look now, everyone have a digital DSLR, and images are generally better and people shoot more images and learn faster this way. Sony is coming out with a cheaper FF DSLR, and I am very sure Canon and Nikon will follow as they won't allow Sony to slowly take over the DSLR market when they continue to roll out new and improved lens offerings.
