Hey, when did that become available? I'm still at 512k, but I'm dreaming of the day when I can upgrade to 1MB! Just imagine a computer that could display 256 colors at the same time!

yeah but that would be a toy no serious computer will ever have stereo audio, a multi-tasking OS or more than 16 colors, that is all amateur hour commodore/atari toy stuff

Isn't the 5 series already just a XXD series camera with a full framed sensor and no pop up flash?

no, the xxD have much faster mirror/shutter/many more fps

the 5 series are rebels with FF sensors....

Canon's thoughts:

we could make a 3D, it would be like 21MP, 6.3fps, have the new 7D AF and price it $3100-$3400

or we could make a 5 and 7 series:

5D2 21MP, FF, slow 4fps = $2700
7D 10MP, APS-C, fast 12fps = $2200

personally i'd give up the 12fps and way prefer option 1 since I'd only need to drag one camera around and I could get all the advantages other than the 12fps all at once, in the two cam setup sometimes you might want more than 4fps AND FF FOV + SNR and #1 also costs a lot less which brings us to....

why should be release a 3D for $3100-$3400 when we can force them into $2700+$2200=$5900 and protect 1 series better at the same time

however, thing is i think more people would go $3100-$3400 then $5900 (of course some would rather go either just $2700 or $2200 than $3400 granted and maybe the total numbers would work out better for them, maybe it makes sense but I wonder what happens if a D700x comes soon and what if it is $3000....)

and who knows maybe BB pricing was way off and the new 7D is not $2200-$2700 but $1600. Still a lot more costly 5D2+7D than one 3D though, but maybe vaguely bearable for some.

I do hope that the BB price is off but I wouldn't be surprised if the initial price is $2200.
Over time the price will have drop to $1700-1800, though.

But you are right - Canon is most probably thinking that a lot of 5DII buyers will be buying a 7D as well.
So they won’t be in a hurry to put the 7D tech into a FF camera.

although they appear as if they may reduce the MP on the 7D from teh 50D in favor of speed so maybe that gives hope for the 3D in 2 years time.... maybe they will drop the 5D and keep it at 21MP (and leave the crazy 30-50MP stuff for the 1Ds line) and raise it to 6-8fps and pop in the 7D AF and call it a 3D....

Then they will have two fast small bodied camera lines, one crop 7-series and one 3-series FF, with the FF line costing like a $1000 more than the APS-C line.

but that would raise praise to get into FF.... so maybe they keep the 5 series going as a slow budget FF.

lots of tiers though

1.6x crop would make this body two years late and many dollars too much (vs D300).

a total misfire.

bonus fail for flash master for "sports" & "birders". ROTFLMAO. What event photogs need 12fps anyways? 5DmkII should have had that. ROTF.

a cheaper, 60d (50d with video & tweaks) would be more welcome in the market & by canon shooters.

So, flash master on the D300s was a misfire? Bird photographers welcome the 1.6x crop and high fps.

The 50D had poor sales.

If the 7D is priced a lot more than the D300s, then I agree it's a total misfire. There's a big market of Canon shooters out there waiting for a camera like the D300s. I'm sure they are not willing to pay that kind of dough for the 7D.

Not really.

Until manufacturers come up with interchangeable backs, there will be room for many tiers.

Turns out that with digital sensors, unlike film, one size does not fit all.
Some people are looking for higher resolution and others value ISO and speed over resolution.

I’m actually waiting for the time when each model will come in two variations ala 1D/1Ds.

Oh, I see that they finally managed to produce the 200-400/4 DO and 500/2.8 DO.

Reminder, look at the December 21, 2001 update.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

a850 is official. 24 mpx full frame and less than $2000.

I think the 7D is to the 5DMKII as the a850 is to the a900.

That's quite a camera (the 850) at an amazing price. I suppose it was inevitable as FF sensor volumes increased in manufacturing volume that prices would fall. Add this to hard economic times and we get a price shift. No doubt this will cause a lot of head scratching for Canon and Nikon, but I am sure they will answer in due course. No doubt Sony is trying to grab newcomers to DSLR, and of course keep them once they are invested in lenses.

If there is a 7D it's success may depend on whether or not it is FF. If it is FF then it should do well, even if it is a bit pricier than the Sony.

Sony seem to get a lot of praise for their ergonomics and interface: has anyone here used one, or become familiar with how they handle?

Is it just me or will the new Sony FF put alot of pressure on the Nikon D700?

TONS!!! Double the megapixels and much lower price, and don't forget built in image stabilization. I'm sure the D700 will go below the $2000 mark once the a850 is available for purchase............

Check out a bunch of musings regarding the a900.

two words: lens selection. I would never get a Sony just for that reason.

I would have to agree with orangefirefish.
Too few and too expensive.

Let's just hope they change that, so as to put more pressure on Canon and Nikon.

I had the original Sony A100 and I really liked it. It's very well built (much better than Rebel I would say), and the internal stabilization works great. I sold it mostly because of, as people say, lens selection. I like using prime and Canon is the only one that makes fast prime. Otherwise, I would have continued to use Sony. Don't we just wish Canon would use internal stabilization in their camera.

Agree on both counts. Although I think they are on the right track - 24-70 f2.8, 35 f1.4 and 135 f1.8. Really not that bad for a serious wedding/portrait photographer.
