If true, APS-C is a bit of a letdown... I've been warming up to the idea of a "prosumer" APS-H camera. The more I think about it, the more that seems like a game changer.
That said, I suppose a higher-end APS-C camera would line up nicely against the D300s, and probably be priced around $1800 as well. It would be nice if they go back to the 12mp XSi sensor, but that that's unlikely I suppose...

By definition a 7 series is lower down the food chain than a 5 series. They cannot sell it for more. They would have to call it a 3D.
Why do they avoid the even single digits: no 8D/6D/4D/2D. I know 4 is some how bad luck but 8/6/2 ?
simple math my friend (but tricky, sloppy, obfuscated 'english'):
8 is twice the bad luck as 4 and 2 is half the bad luck but that is still a lotta bad luck while 7 is 1.5 times more bad luck and that is bad

Well then, that's called a 1ds mark III. Honestly, Canon is not going to release a 1ds3 just without the integrated grip and sell it for the 5d2 price. It doesn't make any business sense. The 3D that people have been wanting is basically Canon's version of the Nikon D700. Practical MP with great High ISO and Pro AF. You can't have high rez and pro AF and also weathersealing at a low price- that's what Canon charges a premium for.
what if nikon does it with a d700x soon?
if this had all gone down just a few years earlier and i was first getting a DSLR and saw a d700x im afraid my EOS lenses from film days would've been on buy/sell fast and wouldve made a decisive but regretful (dont like nikon controls) to nikon after having been canon for a long while

I suppose it is possible that Canon intentionally left the 5DmII with an underwhelming AF in order to allow a gap in the lineup for the 7D:
1Ds - Premium pro hi-rez portrait and landscape camera
1D - Premium pro sports camera
5D - 2nd tier pro hi-rez portrait and landscape camera
7D - 2nd tier pro sports camera
xxD - Enthusiast
xxxD - Consumer
That lineup makes a lot of sense from a pro standpoint. You pick the tool you need. Plus gives you a nice (cheaper) backup option if your main camera is a 1-series.
However, it doesn't make a lot of sense from an enthusiast standpoint. The advanced amateurs want FF, but they want do-it-all. That is part of the success of the D700. And this lineup would not have an answer....Show more →
yeah for the advanced enthusiast the D700 tier will soon turn into the most enticing tier of all by far once they get the density up to around 20D reach levels
probably for many pros too
would be an awful shame if nikon started FF like half a decade behind canon and yet beat them to the killer cam by 2 years....
