finally received mine, construction is great def more than expected from teh price point, and the quality of light is awesome. Nice and smooth yet contrasty shadows.
Of course it'll flap with the slightest of breezes, haven't you ever seen Mary Poppins?
Funny story, I thought that my profoto umbrella was strong, so I tried jumping off my roof, and let me tell you, I almost died.. The umbrella, it did die.. Well that story isn't true but you get the idea.

I wanted a product I could use outdoors. Not in a tornado, not even in a strong breeze, just outdoors with normal slight breeze.
The PLM's work nicely without the front diffuser, but it simply starts flapping in the slightest of a breeze.
Is it unreasonable to expect that a product sold with a front diffuser, will have an attachment system that relies on a combination of gravity and a perfectly windless environment?
My confidence to buy all 6 versions came from Paul pulling other not-up-to-spec products. I didn't expect to be a Beta Tester of a product that in it's current form is not practical to use in virtually any outdoor setting with it's front diffuser attached.
In short, I trusted PCB to be selling a product that would do what he claimed it would do. (Outdoor shooting with PLM's was mentioned several times by Paul on this forum.)
The PLM's are, IMHO a brilliant step forward in brolly design- but Paul at a minimum should put a notice on his website to the effect that the current batch are not suitable for outdoor shooting with the front diffusers attached- because they barely attach....Show more →
When I shoot location portraits, I usually use a 28" Westcott Apollo so I can aim the head towards the back and have a very soft light coming through the diffused front. I want to start doing more environmental portraits where I'm showing more of the background, mixing ambient with the soft strobe. Since I usually don't have an assistant, I was thinking of getting the smallest white PLM for the ease of set-up and use. Now after looking at some of the images here, I'm thinking of the silver with the front diffuser, since this would give me the option of a more specular light without the diffuser on, or my usual(just like my Apollo) soft light when I add the diffuser. Would the small silver give me enough coverage, or should I go with the middle size. I just think the 84" one would be too hard to set up by myself, and too big for an office environment. Any comments, ideas or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
cool thread to read. except for the beef-thing.
anyway i'm really excited right now,
all my alienbees package just landed in Brussels, Belgium.
i can't play with it yet. It's all brokerage and all first.
But still, i'm really looking forward.
I got the 86PLM SILVER+White Front Diffuser... And few heads, diffusers & vagabonds.
It's been a while since i wanted this, i hope all's gonna be ok!
ok. news. i just looked out the PLM. it's big.

vagabonds II are DAMN heavy.
i got a huge paintball bag - bigest bag i found in a cool € range - and i can't pack my beauty dish inside.
i'm really really really really really looking forward to what i'm gonna do next with the Bees. seriously. this is a huge, huge, huge, huge day.
