Prof fate, what exactly are you a professor of? I hope it isn't photography.
Anyone who is coming in here and giving serious negative criticism to Sergio's photos should take a step back and rethink what they are saying. Of course there are no perfect photos, but be nice with your comments. This thread would have been perfectly fine had prof fate not come in here and make ridiculous statements. i find it funny that he is telling Sergio that in 5 or so years he will grow away from his idea of knowing everything in the world. The truth is, prof fate is the one who is acting like he knows everything. Not once did Sergio say that he knows everything, nor did he even come close to implying it. What he did say is that he knows what his clients like. It doesn't matter what someone with no affiliation to Sergio thinks, he is clearly very satisfied with his customer base and they are satisfied with his work. No photographer can please all viewers. Even Annie Leibovitz, one of the most famous photographers of our time, doesn't come close to pleasing everyone that sees her work. I hope everyone who is looking down upon Sergio actually took the time to look at his website, instead of judging his skill from this one session. And even then, people seem to be judging Sergio as a person from his photographs! You guys must have some special skill that i've never heard of, because that is just impressive. Serg, keep doing what you're doing.
I hope prof fate gets banned, his actions are unacceptable in my opinion.

The key for me is that Sergio's responses were to the point that his stuff was un-saleable-- he did not argue about the critiques of the photographs themselves at all. He simply pointed out that the carte blanche statement "this work won't sell" was flatly untrue. It was at that point that a bunch of people took massive offense to this kid daring to prove it was possible to have a different business model than that with which they are familiar. I looked through the thread for the rude and know-it-all comments that have apparently incensed a number of posters, but I have not found anything that particularly qualifies as so terribly upsetting.
The vitriol and fury in some of the comments in this thread are baffling.
The shots without the subject in the series in them (or of the main series subject in the distance etc.) are a pretty logical extension of the idea behind environmental portraits.

Did you just call me an idiot because I said I am happy with my senior portraits Sergio took? Prof Fate, you can go fuck yourself.
It's a wonder you made it your senior year without the ability to read or comprehend what you read.
What I read you to say was "My mommy likes the pictures I take" - Well, duh, yeah. Of course. It's got nothing to do with how good they are or not. If you think the critique of your family and friends has anything to do with the quality of the images you take then you're just fooling yourself. That makes you an idiot.
Ask any 4 year old - mom LOVES his drawings. Stick figures of dogs or dinosaurs doesn't make him a great artist even though mom loves his work.
I'm surprised that prof_fate is still talking after the sample photos he's posted. I'm sure there's a market for his types of portraits. However, I see no creativity and I see no vision. I see the work of a man that knows how to "technically" take photographs - "by the book" kind of boring stuff. "Key light here. Fill light here. Blah, blah, blah... Tilt your head. Now smile."
