I don't post often. But this is just such a fun thread, how can I not be a part of it? ;-) Here are my random thoughts, just in case anybody cares.

I really like Sergio's stuff. I'm also from the PNW, am relatively new to photography, don't have any sort of photo training, and don't know much about posing and lighting. So all those things likely have some influence on my tastes. I just kinda look at stuff and think "I like that", or "I don't like that", and sometimes maybe even "How could I do that?". That being said, I didn't think this set was quite as good as his others. I'm sorry I don't have better critique, it was just kinda the feeling I got when looking through them. However, I also don't have the skills to do it, so I'm just saying that as an observer, not as "I could do better".

I'm also kinda jealous that he's a better tog than me, is much younger, and gets to go travel and shoot weddings with guys like SB. But I just accept that and enjoy his pictures.

Oh and I learned a new word from Ryan Flynn. Anachronism pg 13. -- yup had to look it up. Can't beat learning a new word. Yeah I high 5'd the picture.

I am not familiar with your work so I can't say this is trademark or not. As senior portraits go these are not very good. Nice images, great for a model, etc, but not what sells to seniors. They are, more or less, at their physical prime but yet very self concsious and unsure of themselves. Most are still very much under their parent's shadow/protection/support (kids in many ways, not yet adults).

[clip....]

Overal you need to learn posing, composition, direction of your subject and get the hell out of photoshop. Make good solid images and then perhaps spice a few up
...Show more

i think you should all be ashamed of yourselves for calling that person a bum. i think "economically challenged" would be more appropriate.

anyhow...17 pages in...i'm definitely going to comment after making that kind of investment.

i started reading because i'm familiar with serge's work. his website is featured in the gallery on pro photo's site as an advertisement for their blogging theme. it's a pretty strong endorsement of serge's talent, in my opinion. his work has flair, and i wish i had half his creative vision.

with regard to the images he posted...there's lots of assumptions being made about how he sells, but the reality is that not all seniors are buying wallets or 8x10's to hang over the fireplace. lots of them want facebook images, or pics for their own websites. the family might even want an album (gasp!), in which case a series of photos with plenty of fun, creative images presents a great opportunity for an upsell. i think he did fine, but i would also encourage him not to worry much about what i think.

now, with regard to pro fate's response...

as a photo critique, it really is not very good. some good points, nice business insights, etc. but not what's going to help a budding young photographer develop technique.

overall, you need to learn tact and develop some people skills. get back to the fundamentals of winning friends and influencing people, and get the hell out of the business of trying to make frank assesments as a seasoned veteran, which seems to be how you see yourself.

see what i did there? i constructed my own critique of your critique using the same kinds of phrases you did, and i can't blame serge a bit for being a bit tweaked. not only did you presume to tell him how to run his business, but you were also arrogant enough to tell him - an 18 year old - how his demographic thinks. personally, i thought his response was measured and mature. i doubt i would have been as patient with someone who so blatantly treats their own opinion as gospel.

i also couldn't help notice that as soon as he stood up to you, your own responses got considerably more tactful. i have my own opinions about what that says regarding your motivations. regardless, i respect what you've done with your business and of course some of what you say is true, but you take an extreme position and the fact is this thread got to 17 pages because of the nature of your critique. there's a differenc between being straightforward - which some might call harsh - and just acting like a prick. my background is corporate, and if you worked for me and handled either an internal or external customer like you handled serge, we'd be discussing your future with the company.

just so i don't get called for not offering an alternative, here's what i might have said:

image 6 (first one of second pair) - nice natural pose that works well as part of a complete set and good job of backlighting. he looks like a tough customer, so hopefully you got more smiles out of him, later! quality of pp is very good regardless of whether one prefers the specific style. if there were a technical nit to pick, it would probably only be with the large bright chunk in the upper left. i personally find it distracting, but i also doubt many clients would have a huge issue with it. overall, if this image is hitting the mark with your clients, then keep doing what you're doing!

the moral - if you don't want to get called out, don't be a nanny-nanny-know-it-all, because you might just get owned, and you did.

Chris, keep in mind that those of us well past our 18th birthday remember it well...it was the last time we were SURE we knew everything. My 14 year old daughter is nearing the pinnacle of omnipotence and I can't wait for her to clear that hill and embrace a healthy reality of self-awareness, open-mindedness, and humility.

Yes, it's been many years since high school for me. And I am totally out of touch with that generation and culture.

But, I thought regardless of the times that Senior Portraits were supposed to commemorate ones senior year in High School and preserve their image to look back on.

How do these images do that

I find the work unimaginative and shallow and obviously trying way too hard just to be different.

Which, I think is the appeal to teens. I remember wanting to rebel against everything that popular culture wanted me to conform too. That was cool.

Clearly, THAT's the appeal of these types of photos. Not the photos themselves because, they're nothing special.

Let me add, that I think the photographer is doing a great job and I applaud his effort, enthusiasm and skills at his age.

No matter how difficult it is to say that after his cocksure his attitude.

I think what most people here, that "don't get" Sergio's work, are forgetting is that the pictures you are referring to are part of a COLLECTION of work. They are 1 or 2 or 3 parts of a larger, more comprehensive session. I wouldn't say those images necessarily speak to me individually, but as part of a collection, each shot has their place and they work very well.

I really have to say the older you get the more important age seems to be. Funny that? Because the top photographers around the world are under thirty. Check out people like Joey Lawrence (www.joeyl.com) or phenoms like Lara Jade (larajade.co.uk)

Youth are putting it out like nobody's business, breaking the rules that conform the styles of many photographers. Serg here is putting out phenomenal shots that break all the rules set out by conventional photography, and that's good.

I think Picasso would have had a hard time in art class, or here (especially being a painter )

A graphic designer once told me the only reason to learn rules is to know how to break them. I agree.

For Jimmy above, I'm not certain you are the most qualified person to judge the pics. I'm the PARENT of a senior, and as the person actually PAYING for the photos and contracting with a photographer, I think maybe I can weigh in as well.

I shoot editorial sports about 99% of the time. The other 1% is photographing my 4 kids. As a photographer I detest photoshoped images. Yes, I'm biased since I cannot alter the integrity of the image for an editorial source so I shoot with an eye towards the final product. Thus, when I shoot images of my kids I compose and shoot what I want to see, not a starting point to edit from.

I tend to agree with prof_fate in that most of those images are not ones that I would buy. I'm honestly not sure what the 'foreground kid' and the 'non head shot' are supposed to be saying. It almost looks like they were included by mistake.

The other images kind of look like an ad for a book called 'fun with tilt shift lenses'. I think TS lenses are like fisheyes...use them once and it's awesome, use them more than that and well...it's just overused.

Also, I'm not a fan of the washed out look. On one pic, yea looks cool...on ALL the others...not good.

I don't frequent FM like I used to. I do like to check stuff out on occasion, but so much of what I read is just a love fest. If you peruse the 'critiques' it seems that everyone is afraid to say what they really feel. Thus, you are left with the majority of the comments telling the photographer that they are the world's next big thing. This just isn't the case. Honestly, it's just a joke.

Frankly, if you put yourself out there you need to be ready for the cold hard facts that maybe your stuff isn't that good. If this is your style, and people will actually buy the stuff...congrats. However, simply dismissing someone that disagrees with you is not the best way to improve your abilities.

I think what this has really done is shock some folks who thought that they had a clean handle on what people like to buy-- God forbid someone find a niche market and sell to that! The only real arrogance that I've seen from Sergio in this thread is his having the audacity to defend the charge that none of these images would sell, which is perhaps a useful message to those who haven't updated their look since 1985. Nine thousand new posts explaining how you are the parent of a senior / a senior photographer / a guy who once saw a senior portrait and do not like these images as senior portraits are pointless and come across more as bitterness and arrogance than anything else.

They were presented all together initially but, we don't know they were part supposed to ONLY be viewed in series with the other photoes.

I actually like the shot of the "homeless person" , it shows how the senior is such a great prankster.

Get someone to distract the homeless person , while our senior sneaks his bottle and runs off and tops it up for him in the middle of the vacant lot.

Sure, I'll spare you my opinion so you can go on taking 'snapshots' with your d-rebel and you can call them art after you manipulate them. What a clown. Even though I have never seen your work I'm sure it's the best I would ever see anywhere and you are a master.

There. Now I fit in with the rest of you on FM. Again. What a joke.
