Ok guys, back focused or not? This is extremely typical of my shots. Bird = soft, Trees = sharp. I think I might need a calibration of one or the other or both. Hmm....

With a busy tree like that in the background, the 50d (or at least my 40d) is bound to get confused, you're likely to get 50/50 chance of hitting the bird/trees. You need a 1D

Looks like the common California gull but the wings look odd, maybe morphed, mutated, or cross-bred.

Somebody on POTN identified this as a female boat-tailed grackle. So now I know!

I have a book with probably 120-130 different birds in it, so trying to use that, but some are elusive.

Next weekend if the weather's decent I'll get up real early and see if I can catch some in good light rather than harsh afternoon sun. I can see how birding can become addictive.. only had the 400 for a week so far and already getting hooked.

Thanks Wing. I got really lucky today. A pair of them are locals at a nearby church field in Alviso on the drive to Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge. They are on Disk Drive halfway between Nortech and Grand. The priest said they are there everyday. I can draw you another map if you want!

I also have a series of photos of a gull killing a gosling. Its pretty graphic though so I'm not sure if I should put it up here or at all.

Ummm.... ok. Its pretty bad man. Noelle might freak out. So might some others of more sensitive dispositions.

I didn't bother putting up the ones where the gull squeezed the head so hard the eyes popped out. There was blood everywhere. Then he got mud all over the gosling so he took it to the water and washed it out before swallowing it. Nature can be cruel...

WOW with a big !!!!! You're right, maybe a bit graphic, but that's nature, don't know how the N+W crowd would take it so "do it at your own risk!" But you caught the entire sequence and that in and by itself should be applauded!! On a local note, Noelle has a lonnnnnng way to go to beat this one!!! IMHO.

I told you.. and I even left out the eye-popping out and all the blood too. It was pretty gross.

Conrad, I would definitely put this one on N+W but with alot of disclaimers and see what kind of reaction you will get. For my money, it's pure nature and if they don't get it, they're not shooting nature.

Well I posed a question over there just now, maybe I should just post it up there anyway and catch the fallout in stride.
