Good shooting, Ping.....terns are not very easy to get.
Unfortunately, they are still very scarce in my usual location.....this morning I saw one only briefly. It flew straight towards me so I had a trouble with the lens....too long.
Nice one! Trying to find a 1.4X TC this coming week so we'll see if a little more reach helps. I love FF but it does become a slight disadvantage on the long end

Now thats a great shot Peter! They are so quick its tough to get any kind of detail out of them.

As PetKal said, its a Tern. Tough to get aren't they? This is the best one I have and it is still sucky! Haha!
Conrad, that looks like a sharp tern, well focused and framed, and you got her with a nice wing attitude. However, you might have overprocessed the image a bit.
Try to expose the bird for white feathers, let the cap go black.
Keep the PP as simple as possible, you shouldn't need much if the exposure is in the ballpark.
See this old example:
(1) JPG out of camera.
(2) JPG cropped.
(3) Level adjustment on the crop file + 300/0.3/0 USM.
If the sky is white/blown, see if a moderate PP intervention can improve the situation, if not, wait for blue skies/better light.

You should have gone out after 2, the sun started to come out gradually and now at 6:00pm, it's full sun, slightly hazy. I was out at your Benicia place. Like you said, pretty spread out and hard to reach anything. I looked for your kite but it was nowhere to be found. Towards the end of the day, we ventured out to the end of the park and got a few white pelicans and grebes almost within reach so I shot them just for kicks. So the search for a nearby bird place continues, this one was not it...

Damn sorry Wing. They were there yesterday. Where's ur shots of the pelicans?
Like I said, they were a mile away, but sometimes the camera sees things I can't while shooting, here's one where the pelican is harrassing a seagull who's trying to get away with a halibut or some sort of flatfish which I didn't see until I got home (extreme crop): http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3652/3499626928_75b25cea00_o.jpg
And then, another one where I couldn't see what I was shooting until I got home and blew it up on the monitor. Here's your Dwarf Osprey, looks like they're out there, but again, extreme extreme extreme crop and terrible quality: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3615/3499626776_d9a912168f_o.jpg

Cool shots Wing! That sole in the gull's beak is a great capture. But you see what I mean about all the action being so far away huh? That area begs for the 800mm to get good shots. That last pelican is very nice though. Which part of the area was he in? I'm going there tomorrow all day to see what I can get! Damn that dwarf osprey. He's taunting me appearing for everyone else but me! Haha!
These and really the only action I got all day was taken at the end of the park road where there is a parking lot and a path down to a small beach area. My best vantage point was from the parking lot.

Well they look alright to me! Also, don't you hate grey overcast days? I find that kind of light is even harder to deal with than harsh afternoon light. Anyway I'll be heading out there tomorrow morning to see what I can find. Wish me luck!
