Where in Benicia did you take these and is it in a public area where anyone can get to? I'm always looking for places close by to go shooting.
Benicia State Park off Columbus Pkwy off 780. Don't go all the way in. The pair hunt near the clearing by the power lines. I might go again monday we'll see. Maybe I'll see you there. I hear tomorrow is shot from the rain. Good luck Wing!
Well if there's a clear outline between the bird and sky, you should be able to make a selection for your mask and tweak it a bit. From there, all you need is a fresh blue sky photo or make one yourself.
Or... if you can't be bothered, just wait till it stops raining since you know where the pair is nesting anyway.
Oh another thing Wing, the 400mm is kinda lacking there. Such wide open spaces and the the kite hovers so damn high. Hope you get better shots than I did.

Hmmm never thought of that. Thanks man! I'll try again soon though at first. The pair was so fun just to watch let alone photograph. Still looking for Noelle's ospreys though! Haha!

If you sell one of your camera and a few lenses, you should be able to buy the 600mm or 800mm.

Thanks Conrad. Was there much birds there other than the kites?

There were a couple snowys and egrets as well as red tails too. I ignored them for the most part trying to get the kites! Haha!
Well, rain-wise it's going to rain in the morning and may have light sprinkles in the afternoon. It's close enough I might give it a shot tomorrow afternoon.

Thank you! I just yesterday decided to try out back button focus and wow, I can't believe I've spent years not using it. Makes everything SO much easier -- especially when watching and waiting for a bird to make a move.
Of course, I had a senior moment (I'm 34, but they do happen) yesterday evening. Was going to shoot a crow taking off, and the lens wouldn't focus. I tried switching back and forth between servo and one shot mode. Nothing. Tried flicking to manual then back to auto. Nothing. I started going "oh crap, I just bought this and now it's dead" and wondering about cleaning the contacts on the lens...when I realized I was trying to focus with the shutter button. Oopsie on that one...
PS: Congratulations to Noelle! This thread has been hugely inspirational to me and she's one of the culprits who made me fork out this much cash for a lens that WON'T EVEN ZOOM....Show more →
thank you! I love helping others spend money
34.... is too young for senior moments!! I think we shall call that one DUH!
I love the back focus button ... I will never switch back
