Not much of an upgrade for current 5D users yet these cameras will sell like hot cakes and mostly to current 5D owners.

Note that its inclusion here is probably because Moby now allows his music to be used for free in non-profit, non-commercial projects. Whether you like or hate his music, i think this is worth applauding.
Wow... I was considering passing on this upgrade and keeping my old and trusy 5D, but I already spent a ton of money getting a Letus Extreme to pair up with my HVX200 so I can use my Canon EF lenses... I know it isn't a replacement for a video camera, but this footage is stunning.
Smart marketing. He gets his music out there, & he gets to look noble.
(It's not like anyone would ever sue a non-profit organization from using their music. That would incur massive legal costs, with no gain whatsoever. Even a stop-injunction costs money)
But heck, I like Moby, so I applaud him nontheless!

the unfortunate thing is .mov tends to be finicky on PC's. Sadly these canon files, at least the pre-pro ones, won't run on PowerDVD and QuickTime doesn't seem to take full advantage of HW decoding. Using PowerDVD to playback bluray AVC 38Mb/s plus 5.1 uncompressed hidef audio and making use of my video card fully my CPU is only at like 20% usage! I hope the release format is more compatible with powerdvd and doesnt use such a tricky header that only quicktime (which is HORRIBLE) can play it at all. Trying a couple original from camera 1920x1080x30p files from teh 5dmkii there were simply way too many dropped frames on my 4400+ X2 AMD and the audio didn't work most of the time, if quicktime was decent and if it used full HW accel, with my video card, it should've been a breeze to play it 100% smoothly.
My video card has complete h.264 decoding not that quicktime realizes....

Also because it's a Macbook. You prolly need a Sata II (or better) raid array.
-And we're only talking mpeg. How the heck do they deal with what comes out of a Red?
Hey, nothing cheesy about that song. It was the highlight of the video, in fact! Just kidding, although I think we can all agree that as amazing of a still photographer Vincent is, he won't win any best director awards anytime soon--great video quality, but what was that video all about really?

might have a touch more aliasing and little things than the Hidef cam footage but otoh lacks a few of the little things the videocam has and overall the quality just makes the videocam (and it's a good one) look sad!

It's happened to me.
Bubbles coming up under a violent waterfall; grasses and bushes blowing in the wind at sunset; boats coming through a canal. Surf breaking over the rugged coastline. Yeah, there have been times that I've thought my scene would make a nice little video clip (stock video? scenic video? I dunno what the use would be).
But yeah, there have been times I've been tempted to dabble in video.
Possibly this is a "lure" feature to get people like me interested in video... so that we start looking more seriously at Canon's expensive digital HD recorders (and lenses)... dangerous territory.
Amen! Or my personal favorite - my 2yo daughter doing fun and new things. Stills are awesome, and I don't have the patience to carry a video cam along with my regular setup, but there are so many times it would be great to have both in one to capture those moments in time.
