In my opinion, the MK III's LCD is much much better than any other Canon LCD I've used before (including the 20D, 5D, MK2N (5D/MK2N were the worst with a blue cast/horrible contrast)... in every way, from color fidelity, contrast, and ability to use in bright daylight. No comparison.
With the new anti-reflective coatings, these new LCD's from Canon (on the 50D and 5D II) are said to be even better than those on the new Nikons or Sonys.
Yeah, I laughed at the music but the shots are definitely stunning. I particularly swooned over the helicopter sequence. I find it funny that most of the Photographers using this will probably use it for Family videos lol, just crazy seeing what its actually capable of.
Thanks, been waiting to see this. Video quality is really good. It's kind of choppy when I run it, even though there's a buffer... why is that? Does it run smoothly for you folks?
It runs a bit choppy for me too but I was watching it off a Crappy old Dell Latitude. Was pleasantly surprised that Canon cut down the resolution so everyone could watch it.
No sunglasses during daylight but need then at night but the reflection off glasses during the helicopter ride was excellent. Now understand why Vincent all excited about the quality of the video, it looks amazing.
I noticed no rolling shutter effects, Cableaddict. I think what you are seeing is an imperfect gyromount in the helicopter. The guys over at Luminous Landscape are also saying that the camera lacks any noticable rolling shutter problems. Apparently there are a number of professional HD video cameras (SONY EX-1 for one) that use CMOS sensors, and although they have rolling shutter effects, its so minimal that it doesn't even matter. In fact, the fabled RED One has rolling shutter effects, but that did not stop people from making multi-million dollar films using it. See http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/5dmkiipre.shtml for details.

Jelly?
I was on the lookout for Jellocam, an artifact that is seen on any motion camera that uses a CMOS sensor. This can be caused by the sensor not recording the image all at once, but rather in a pass from top to bottom, which means that if anything is moving in the frame during that 1/30 of a second it will appears to shimmy and bend. This is a problem that is much discussed in the video world.
The highly regarded Sony EX-1 (which Chris and I, and many pros and broadcasters use) has it, but to such a small extent as to not be much of an issue at all. The RED One camera has it, but so little that it doesn't seem to bother film makers shooting multi-million dollar feature films. The new D90 shows it quite badly on the brief demo clips that have appeared online, but how big a deal this turns out to be still remains to be seen once demo cameras become available to knowledgeable reviewers.
As for the Canon 5D MKII I see no jello-ish artifacts. I'm not saying that they may not be there, but in the day of shooting that I did, taking quite a few shots to specially look for it, I didn't see any....Show more →
Folks, it isn't "bourne music" or "bourne identity music". Its a track called "Extreme Ways" by Moby from his album "18" (decent album too). No Moby fans here?
What I have seen so far with the video quality of the 5D Mark II, it is incredible! I will be selling all my "old" video gear on eBay....my wife will be extremely happy. Until I tell her I will be "reinvesting it".
I like the concept of the "combocam", plus I have to drag less stuff around.
Given that Vincent only had such a short time frame to make this little movie, and they shot 12 hours worth of footage on one battery (being recharged...) it is quite remarkable endeavor!
Wow.. 5DII is indeed capable of capturing amazing video.. now I am really tempted to buy one... but I cant justify adding another body to my amateur arsenal..

Here's a cropped image with some sharpening. Too bad it's only a JPEG file, as you can do a lot more pp with a RAW file!
I've heard you can do a lot more pp with a raw file. Never seen a single example but i do hear that.
In fact most of the award winning images at wppi each year are taken by photographers who only shoot in jpeg. They obviously don't seem to think they are limited by any means and neither do those who judge their work.
But you are not adding another body. You are buying an HD videocam that can make excellent still images!

I noticed a little wobble in the cobblestones as the camera pans up to the lady in the red dress. Nitpicking though. Overall it looks mighty impressive.

Note that its inclusion here is probably because Moby now allows his music to be used for free in non-profit, non-commercial projects. Whether you like or hate his music, i think this is worth applauding.
