I'm waiting for the first previews that test AF-speed and accurancy (RG?! :P ) on this new 5d MKII versus the old one.

I'm pretty happy with the center point af on my 30d though, so it is not a dealbreaker for me per se, just a minor annoyance as it shows part of the problem I have with canon corporate strategy (or, corporate strategies in general :P )

i would tend to agree.

"Although no formal testing has been done on the new model yet..."

although we have seen that canon's product testing can't catch all bugs in a product before release, for a canon engineer to say that "no formal testing has been done on the new model" sounds a bit odd to me.

ymmv. cheers =)

For me it pretty obvious what Canon needs to do. First, design a small body that convinces everyone its as durable and watertight as the 1 series. Perhaps replace the plastic with steel. Or iron. No...... bronze. Lets go with bronze.
Then just do the the largest sensor they can at a decent frame rate. At 12 mp they can do about 7 fps. That would be just fine for most people. Or what we have now 21mp At 3.9 fps.
It seems that many people who want a sall fully "pro" body would pay $1000 more for that spec. That has to produce a higher profit margin.
So 5DII as is.
A 4D 21mp, 3.9 fps 45pt AF $3600.
The 1Ds would be the large body version of the 4D at 2x Digic (so 7.8 fps) At ~$5000.
So I added a model to what they currently do. That has to be better than making so many people disatisfied.

Hey sorry if this is a dumb question, but if I shoot with the mk2 at the "small" resolution of 5.2MP, will I get some kind of nice pixel-averaging that improves the noise situation at high ISO?

As far as I can tell, yes: sRaw on my 1Ds3 doesn't look much worse for noise than downrezzing the 21Mpixel file.

The 5D2 is much cooler than the D90 ;-)

is canon protecting us all by keeping the 1D/1Ds features at a price that is prohibitive for the uncommitted photographer? years ago when i started doing CG animation for features and TV a workstation was $60K or more and the software was $25-40K. this kept everything nice and cozy. you didn't have to fear spare bedroom production facilities underbidding you. by making the 5DII an "art" camera isn't cannon protecting those who have invested enough to enjoy the premium DSLR experience. i am now a bum who lives by spending enough time in the hills with my 5D to get by. the 5DII was made for my lifestyle. i really don't want 1D/1Ds users seeing me or my camera as a threat to their ambitions or lifestyle. those who do BIF or sports on a budget are even luckier than us landscape bums in the 50D. i am very pleased to sell my 5D and one lens + a few hundred dollars and get a 5DII. 21MP, much better weatherproofing, nice new screen and menus, some video, expanded low light capability. may canon and nikon continue to evolve their offerings and provide the tools that define the age we play in.

"Some say it's a bargain already". Not in England it isn't a bargain. Eye wateringly expensive I'd call it.

Lets see, if I wanted an outfit of the 5D2 plus the new 24mm f1.4 L:

Camera body: £2300

24L mk2: £1400

Total cost: £3700

Ex VAT cost: £3150

£3150 = $5750 USD

Wow, Canon have really raised the bar for value for money!

I said "some say"... Thereby not referring to my own opinion

But I do agree with you... If I look at those prices the word "bargain" isn't the first thing that comes into my mind either. Maybe you should wait until prices have come down a little?

I was listening to the posting link to the Chuck Westfall interview. The new features sound quite nice. The video is only mildly interesting, but the fact that you can still get 21 MP still images while shooting video is pretty neat.

Hello Daan,

Sure, I wasn't getting at you!, your post just gave me the opportunity to sound off! I'm just amazed at Canon's pricing these days. Hasn't anyone told them that they do have full frame competition? Competition that can only get stronger over the next year or two.

Seems to me that Canon are relying a little too much on Nikon's failure to bring out a few fast wides. That Nikon full frame with 20+ megapixels can't be too far away either.

You are correct about timing, I was thinking of buying a FF camera this year, looks like I'll have to look again at the market next spring, see what the prices are doing then.

Ouch! How much is a D700 + 14-24 /2.8 combo? (I know, not the same but it'd be very tempting if less expensive and you don't need video).

I guess a trip across the pond to pick up a 5D2 and other goodies would pay for itself very easily, yes?

Cheers!

Here in the UK the D700 plus 12-24 costs £2300 ex VAT. Thats around $4200 USD. Now that's quite a deal!

Now, I could just buy a D700 body at around £1500 (ex Vat) and use it with my beloved Nikkor 28mm f1.4 for nightwork. I could then keep my Canon lenses and use them with my 40D, wait a couple of years and see if Canon have brought out a sensibly priced 10/15 megapixel fullframe body by then.

Isn't it all relative to your overall standard of living and salaries, though?

(Otherwise the average Norwegian would be shooting with a 300D, and that's not what I am seeing)

So far I think the status is:

I am going to love the image quality and iso noise levels.

I am going to love the build quality and added weather sealing.

I'm going to have my doubts about the af, the viewfinder blackout/shutter lag until I have tested them ok, or found them to be not-perfect but within limits

Thats a complete turn around from the posts you had 50 pages ago. Coffee must've kicked in.

Also, a 1000 USD is less than a lot of people in the US pay for each month's health insurance. What is the cost in the UK and Norway.

Same price as Canada, I think; $0

But our income taxes are much higher than yours (and I gladly pay).

Holy smokes. I’ve never seen a post quite like this one. I think it grew by four pages while I was trying to read through every entry.

A point that most people are missing is that the 5DII is completely faithful to the vision of the original 5d. That concept was to make every design decision to maximize the deliverable IQ while minimizing the cost. This characteristic is what made the 5D the first DSLR classic and the camera, which 3 years after it’s release, is still the IQ value king and the IQ standard by which other cameras are judged.

Absolutely!!! I'd seriously doubt the 3D will ever exist. When the 1D goes FF, there won't be any need for a 3D, except for a compact bodied pro camera. But the 5D fills that void pretty well.

1-3 years.
