yeah, i think people forget hwo rarely they ever approach a 12 minute continuous clip unless it is of a speech or something and then you can always restart it and continue with another 4GB file after a second-long pause.

And after changing to another data card.

Does anyone know if this camera can download it's video data to a pc in real-time? Either pre-converted to mpeg or as separate video-only?
----------------

-and BTW, syncing audio to video for something like a 90 minute movie is not fun, even with 2-pops all over the place, and even assuming you even have the software to do it. But yeah, I guess that is a workable alternative if the video itself somehow works out.

Actually, if all you're recording is dialogue, then you could use something like the vocalign plugin, with is practically automatic. And you'd want to re-do as much as possible in looping anyway, so OK maybe not such a big deal after all.

-But then you have to ask: Can we opt to turn OFF the bult-in audio and only record video inside the camera, so a to get more room on the card or to require less processing at the computer card? (assuming real-time downloading is even possible) That might get interesting, still overlooking the "jello" factor.

Sorry if it has been talked about already, but how much better should i expect to see in noise between the 5d2 and 5d? Can I expect 1 stop? maybe 2? I guess we won't really know until it comes out.

I saw somewhere (I think on Rob Galbraith's site) that Canon is claiming 1 - 1.5 stops improvement from the original 5D to the new 5DII.

Chuck Westfall states it is 3-stops better than the original 5D.

Thanks.

Interesting tidbit about additional weather sealing - rubber gaskets around buttons, etc. but still not to the level of the 1D3. Frankly, Chuck's description of the weather sealing was reassuring. I use my 5D in all kinds of crappy SE Alaska rain and mist and it hasn't missed a beat without any gaskets. Added gaskets, etc. will give me that much more peace of mind if I decide to purchase a 5D2.

Another interesting tidbit about availability - he says they're scheduled to be in stores by the end of November but then adds something like "We'll be happy to have these out by the end of the year." I thought that was a bit of a hedge on the availability date but it could just be an innocent generalization.

Oh, he also confirms the $1699 price for the new 24 f/1.4. Ouch. I was contemplating one but maybe I'll buy a used Mk I.

Cheers!

Oh well, another crappy 9 point AF sensor array. ZZZZZZ. Looks like we'll still have to wait for the next "revolution" in the 3D to get a AF system even close to Nikon or even what the EOS 3 had ten years ago.

I may be a whiner but I'm very disappointed. Seriously considering jumping ship.

Just to point out. The Nikon D700 AF is sensitive to -1 EV and the 5DMkII AF is sensitive to -0.5EV.

Repeat after me "I am not a whiner. I am a disappointed consumer expressing my views so that Canon can take them into consideration when developing new products. My opinion represents valuable, free and unsolicited market research for Canon." Don't let intolerant, complacent and strident voices bully you into thinking you're a whiner. In fact, try and find a little bit of amusement in the fact that those same folks complaining about whining could very well be considered to be whining about other so called "whiners."

Cheers!

My 20D did better with the 100-400 than the 40D as does my 5D. I specifically bought the 40D to be my 1D II wild life partner for added reach. I haven't tried the 40D with a fast lens yet, but it's AI servo performance with the 100-400L is crap. One shot is perfect, no complaints.

I'm loving ai servo on the 70-200 2.8 IS with my 40D. But 2.8 is my slowest lens. Haven't tried anything like the 100-400L or 400L.

Holy smokes. I’ve never seen a post quite like this one. I think it grew by four pages while I was trying to read through every entry.

A point that most people are missing is that the 5DII is completely faithful to the vision of the original 5d. That concept was to make every design decision to maximize the deliverable IQ while minimizing the cost. This characteristic is what made the 5D the first DSLR classic and the camera, which 3 years after it’s release, is still the IQ value king and the IQ standard by which other cameras are judged. It also caused a lot of folks to complain that the 5D lacked all the busy features of other cameras in it’s price range. The 5DII seems to fall into exactly this model. Yup, the autofocus aint so great, but you’ve got roughly twice the resolution of the original 5D at less than the 5D original price, with much improved low light capability. If you think of yourself as an artist, if you think the ability to select the one focus plane that the camera is actually focused on is more important than letting the very small brain of the camera select the focus plane, if you have a large format printer and print large color or black and white enlargements from you camera then my prediction is that you are going to love this camera. If you shoot mainly for 4x6 snapshots of family photos or if you shoot mostly high speed sports photography then you are not going to have much use for this camera. I for one fully intend to buy one if the follow on reviews are half as good as the Canon specs indicate, and I predict that this camera will be a big seller for Canon. It also provides an opening for a next year release of a 3D which might end up being a more well rounded camera than either the 5D or the 5DII. In my opinion, Bravo Zulu to Canon for sticking to your guns and delivering the artists camera.

Screw the artists, they're just a bunch of drug addled freaks, no one cares about them and their mothers hate them - they deserve nothing but disdain. No eosfun for artists

How do you feel about drug addled artsy birders? Does anybody care about them? Are they subject to the same maternal hatred, disdain and exclusion from EOSFUN?

I sure hope not....

I've enjoyed the sometimes rancorous back and forth of this and the preceding rumor thread. Having read so much of both I feel the need to contribute my 1.5 cents to the proceedings. Given all the repressed hopes that have been on hold for one and half years, years, this was going to be a train wreck for somebody. But I believe that Canon missed part of the boat by not adding 8 measly (cheap?) cross-type sensors to the existing array. It might have made this even more of a 1DsIII killer, but it would have truly be a 700d killer and this board would have been all smiles. Well, maybe then we'd hear more about the 3.9 fps... Nevertheless, talk about your lost opportunities. And like a lot of the contributors I feel a bit tweaked that some of the simple things like a remote flash trigger were left out. It does seem a bit like giving one's customers the finger.

I wonder how much of this discontent springs from the contradictory price positioning of the camera in the US vs the UK. I have never seen anything like it and can't imagine how Canon can argue that the 5dII is worth both less and more than the D700. It's hard to imagine why someone in the UK would buy this camera given the cheaper competition, particularly if they don't need all those pixels. And if I were in that position and had a substantial investment in Canon lenses I would be hopping mad too.

However, living in California, at $2,700 this is a no-brainer (I'm particularly qualified for those). As the (patient?) owner of a 300d I ordered one yesterday (happy to pay the sales tax and support my local store) and plan to buy this puppy as soon as it is available if not sooner. I've learned a lot with the Rebel and gotten some (to me) marvelous shots and have spent the intervening time glassing up, but it will be terrific to be able to take more than four shots at a burst and review them on the same day, and on a more-than-1.5 inch screen in real color. Never mind 25,600, how about usable ISO above 400, and did someone say movies? And full-frame to boot, and all them pixels? Come to papa!

that's comparing JPGs and is due to digic IV engine

sensor is the same size so that's even

new one supposed to have better electronics and less intense color filters
but smaller pixels, maybe smaller pixel read noise met by better read electronics and color filters and microlenses match smaller photosites?

wild guess 2/3 stop better after resizing?

anyway hardly a real 3 stops better unless you only shoot jpgs

not that 2/3 wouldn't be nice.

i could be wrong too

anyway might be 2 stops better than 50D?? and 2 and 1/3 better than 40D?
