Chuck Westfall states it is 3-stops better than the original 5D.

Listen to his full interview at:
Inside Digital Photo Special Report

that\'s comparing JPGs and is due to digic IV engine

actually sensor will no way be 3 stops better.

sensor is the same size so that\'s even

new one has large micro lenses so that does collect more light so not sure what the ratio is but otoh smaller photosites so take a guess and call it even?

new one supposed to have better read electronics (+1/3 at some iso\'s??)

new one has less intense color filters (+1/3 at cost of somewaht less color fidelity)

so i would guess AT MOST 2/3 stop at the pixel level and this is probably wildly optimistic

new one has almost 2x pixels so something less than +1 stop after resizing so a wild guess is 1 and 1/3 stop better per image at best and more likely 2/3 stops better or maybe 1 at RAW per image. Not bad all the same though, if hardly 3.

actually i should really look at the data tables at the chicago site and see the 5d and 1dsmkiii details and then make some adjustments from there.
