It seems to me that different users have different needs. Yet, why do those who don't find everything they need/want/wish for in the 5DII sound so strident and emotional? And the fanboys so absolute and intolerant?
Is this some kind of love/hate story? With a Japanese conglomerate? At least with Apple, I might understand, just, but with a Japanese conglomerate, a corporate animal devoid of any emotion and sensitivity, just like its sibling and competitor Sony and Nikon?
A camera is only that. It should not be expected to cure the ills of the world or stabilize the financial markets. It reminds me of the wonderful text by Nobel recipient Isaac Bashevis Singer, whose words, transposed to photography could inspire some of us.
Why I write for children
by Isaac Bachevis Singer
Children read books not reviews.
Children don't read to find their identity.
They don't read to free themselves from guilt, to quench their thirst for, or to get rid of alienation.
They have no use for psychology.
They detest sociology.
They don't try to understand Kafka or Finnegan's Wake.
They still believe in God, the family, agnels, devils, witches, goblins, logic, clariy, punctuation, and other obsolete stuff.
They love interesting stories, not commentary, guides or footnotes.
When a book's boring, they yawn openly, without any shame or fear of authority.
They don't expect their beloved writer to redeem humanity. Young as they are, they know that it is not in his power. Only the adults have such childish illusions.

"It's absurd to do a straight comparison between these two images. One was shot under flash lighting at iso 200 with a 200mm lens at f11 and 1/250th, and the other was shot in contre-jour lighting with a 50mm lens at f2 and 1/100th. Such a comparison will tell you nothing whatsoever about the differences between the cameras, and is likely to be very misleading."
Brainiac I do not disagree with you on this, but it should be said that this is done here by most in any case. People are basing opinions about ISO, Noise, etc. on sample images. These images I used come from the Nikon and Canon sites respectively. I am sure that whomever put them up use them as a marketing tool. So why can we not use it for the same reasons?
I will disagree however that it would lead to misinformation. How can comparing images lead to misinformation? We are photographers after all, we take images, and we compare them.
I do not have to shoot in the same light in the same environment to have a gut-feel that something from a certain camera is not to my liking, or that something is just damn good.

Your efforts are very-much appreciated.
any commentary on the AF - particularly the outer AF points? I know that the center AF point is good, just like on the 5D.
I tried to test the outer points, but the lighting in the store was too good to really challenge the AF. I talked to the canon rep that held the show, and he was actually not sure about 9 cross types or 1 cross types, but the local guy from the store was pretty sure about 1 cross, rest normal. It seemed fast and snappy with the 35 1.4 mounted for sure! I must say that even though I have not much experience with 1-series cameras, this felt lot closer to those in build quality than to my 30d.
if u don't like go an get a nikon. if the noise pattern holds true to form like the 5D mkI with 21 Mpix resolution plus the other goodies the 5D mkII will be a devastating tool in the right hands.
get over it. learn to use the tool. in other words improve your individual photography skills. sounds like a bunch of i want an autonomous camera whinnies to me. oh i can't trust my skill set to get the shot so i must have the camera do it for me whiners.
IQ is the bottom line and nikons don't have the IQ run with the big boys (Canon).
How will the 21 mp resolution on the 5D interface with some of the lenses we use regularly? Will it show the lack or resolving power of some lenses we have been using and satisfied with? I'm wondering if some of our faves will now show their weaknesses with the enhanced resolution of the 5DII.

Think primes
But seriously, I find my 24-70L lacking in resolving power on my 1Ds3. My 35L, 85L II, 135L and 70-200mm f/4 IS are doing fine though.
Big deal, they doubled the megapixels, added a bigger screen with live view, and shoots HD movies.
It's still not weather sealed, no built in vert grip, the 21 mpix will eat up memory, it's only 3.9fps.
I can't wait for everyone to start selling off there old 5D's so I can buy one.
Hmmm, weather sealing and a built-in vertical grip. That rings a bell, can't exactly put my finger on it...Oh, wait! That's a 1 series! You're in luck my friend, Canon already makes 2 different varieties of the camera you seek.

Noise levels are looking good. I wish the guy had taken some f/5.6 pics to judge details a bit better. They all look rather soft to me.
Yeah it looks like he was so excited to be using it that he forgot to stop down. . Noise levels are amazing, though. Sure if you blow it up 100% you can see some, but who the hell cares about that size most of the time?
I'm seriously more excited now than before. Awesome, awesome, awesome.
The pixel density is like that of a 30D/350D/20D, so in the center at least, the lenses should act like a review site like PhotoZone (which uses a 350D). Many lenses can outresolve the sensor, particularly stopped down.
And diffraction doesn't start to affect things until beyond f8.
The corners will be where things get dicey...

We better calm down, in a couple month we are will be talking about how good is the IQ of the 5DMK2, and believe me when you start to work with big files and see all the detail you are getting, all the room to crop and how clear are the files from noise you will understand how good this camera is.
I know is not a perfect camera I too wanted a better body with better AF and FPS but for landscape, travel, events and macro work will do fine. But for $2,700.00 is a great buy.
I have a 1Ds MkII and is only 4 FPS versus 3.9 and the 1Ds2 is a great camera, I do believe that with the new Digic IV the AF will be faster and precise than the 5D.
So CANON went for IQ as many people have say instead of a pro body with less IQ.
I just wonder the new 1Ds IV how many MP is going to sport and how many FPS will have with two Digic IV processor….. Stay tuned for February 2009…. Is coming...
