I don't know if this is news for you, but most manual focus glass have AF-confirm, both the new Zeiss glass and that which is used with adapters

Full electronics in the new Canon version of Distagon 21 is the strongest argument
for me to stay with Canon. I don't have any camera at the moment.
Funny as I sold my 5D mostly because of the lack of weather protection and a so-so AF.
Now I can get a new 5D II with minimal weather sealing improvements and the same AF...
I've tried Nikon, liked it a lot. We can expect a higher resolution body(ies) from them soon too.
But one lens I will be adding to my setup first - Zeiss 21mm is just better on the Canon side.
And I like my other Canon lenses a lot.
It's just very disappointing that Canon COULD have improved the new camera so much
more without a much higher price. They just chose not to. As they've been doing for last
few years. Nothing has changed in their approach - must be a rally amazing sensor
or they are just completely blind. Time will tell very soon.

It's absurd to do a straight comparison between these two images. One was shot under flash lighting at iso 200 with a 200mm lens at f11 and 1/250th, and the other was shot in contre-jour lighting with a 50mm lens at f2 and 1/100th. Such a comparison will tell you nothing whatsoever about the differences between the cameras, and is likely to be very misleading.

To compare properly, you need to take the same exact photograph in controlled conditions, and process both optimally, making sure to resize one or both files to the same size as or larger than the larger file.

You are testing the 5D2 right now?

Can you say that the 5D2 AF feels more responsive than the 5D's AF? Also, does it look like it is faster? Or more accurate? Difference between center and outer AF points?

What's so EOSfunny about some of these complaints of lack of the AF capabilities; they come from a few photographers who praised heaven they have the ability to mount (manual focus!) Zeiss glass now They shouldn't even care about the use of AF it seems

I use both, extensively, at every job. Canon provides an M/AF switch so that photographers can take manual control when they need to. Considering the very wide range of circumstances in which DSLR autofocus systems are a total failure, it doesn't make any sense to suggest that a camera this expensive shouldn't be able to do both well.

It is a tad askew. It seems like an alleged "sports" camera like a 40D would benefit from having a 5D's AF system. And an alleged "studio" camera like the 5D would be better off with the 40D's.

Weird.

A tad... It makes no sense at all.

Daan, you missed a quote. It's Rob Galbraith (who else) who said the tracking has been erratic at best. Not our friend Chuck Westfall. If he had said so he would be invited for a cup of tea with mr. Mitarai in a not so EOSfunny meeting

I know, I didn't think of you as one of the above mentioned whiners Richard. You know your gear and the fact that a tool is just a tool. Nothing more or less. Anyway that's where that MF switch is for isn't it? Have EOSfun!

Yep, I saw that... But besides that, user reports seem to be on Rob's hands... 40D AI Servo tracking is not the best out there...

BTW... Mr Westfall do said this:

Somewhat surprisingly, Canon has not adopted the 40D/50D's AF system which, on paper, is superior, given that all nine of its AF points are cross-type. Canon USA's Westfall says the reason for that is the "6 Assist AF points plus center point were deemed to provide a higher level of performance for AI Servo AF than the center point-only arrangement of the [40D and] 50D."

In other words, the 5D is better at AI Servo

User reports, you say? User reports are made because someone wants to complain about hurt feelings you know. But have you seen our presentation boards? They show lots of EOSfun and proof that 40D and AI servo tracking isn't bad at all. And you haven't seen Brutus yet I guess

I don't think it's legitimate to call people whiners when they complain, even bitterly, about the 5D2's autofocus. There are a great many reasons why 5D users hoping to upgrade are rightly disappointed with the spasmodic behaviour of Canon's AF developments. The solution to complaints about the mk3 and 40D/50D AF systems is to make a better AF system, not go back to a 3-year-old one. A 21 megapixel camera costing £2300 deserves better AF than this, as the Nikon D300 illustrates. I will almost certainly get one of these cameras now, instead of two or three, and it will quite possibly be joined by a D700 or its successor. That's what this marketing-led decision has achieved in my little corner. Canon is failing to meet the Nikon challenge in the semi-pro arena, not because it can't, but because it won't.

Like the Nikonians deserve a 21mp sensor in their D300 I guess This is different camera makers, different philosophy, different marketing, different audiences, different pricing. Think marketing, not features, think like EOSfun

I'd rather believe balanced opinions on the 40D's AF performance, thank you.

Canon would have done it the other way round if true, lower spec camera now and higher spec camera just before photokina. Sorry you've seen their entire announcements related to lenses and DSLR's now - 50D, 5D II, 24L II

I don't think so, they always have done it the other way around, expensive bodies FIRST, and then a few months later the stripped down version retaining 80% of the specs at lower price (this way they rip all the money available from wealthier users before reaching the budget photog's). You'll notice Nikon has *always* followed this path as well, in a very consistent manner : D100/D710, D200/D80, D3/D700... Oh, and by the" way the MkII does NOT support EF-S lenses.

I couldn't phrase it better. Again, the sensor must be amazing or they are seriously in trouble.

I am not interested in marketing. I am a constituent market. Right now marketing and eosfun seem to be only sporadically commensurate.
