This is in line with what my CPS rep. told me... He tried one out yesterday.
Pretty bold statement though... That they were lying about it to cover things up. It would have come out anyway before the thing would hit the shelves by the end of november. At least brushing up and using a 3 year old AF isn't something they are bragging about. Actually, you don't hear them at all about the AF... They probably know they didn't do something they should be proud off
But why have 9 (cross type) on all spec sheets? Are there just ignorant webmonkeys that fix these things or is it miscommuncation inside Canon?

I own about $35,000 worth of Canon equipment, including 1D-2, 1Ds-3, 600mm F4, 200mm F2.0 bla, bla, bla.
If my opinion worth anything to you, then please listen carefully. I WANT BETTER PIXELS NOT MORE PIXELS!!
Marketingdroid: "Punters want better pixels not more pixels. Can we do that?"
Engineer: "There's no trade-off."
Marketingdroid: "So why do photographers think there is?"
Engineer: "Because they compare 100% crops between two cameras without first uprezzing files to equal magnification."
Marketingdroid: "What does that mean? Just give us more pixels. See you in January."
AF - I like to MF but what they have is sufficient for when I use AF.
3.9 fps - I like to make photographs one at a time so it's not an issue for me.
Live View - I like viewfinders so I just wouldn't use it.
HDVideo - I don't think I'll need it but I'd probably try it to see if I can use it.
21 mpx - I'll have to wait and see what it looks like. I hear the 5D has pixel size of 6.4um which is about the same as my 20D but the new microlens structure may make a difference.
Price - I have the cash in hand but will wait until I can try one (and other cameras) for myself.

Another thing about the HDVideo... Does anybody realize that the sound recording will be very bad and that by touching the cam when filming, the noise of that will be recorded too? Pretty useless feature if you ask me...

Look on the bright side... At least you will plenty of pixels to crop when using the center AF point only... Or you could just MF of focus-recompose
Yeah.. Juhu!
Well, it is not a dealbreaker for me, I'll get it nevertheless, it is just anoying that they can't get the info out right. I got my hopes up when it said all 9 cross + extra sensitive in center, but well, I'll survive :P
As much as I like the new battery, it's at least disturbing why 50D - a brand new
camera introduced a month ago uses the old one. That means that if I want
to use a 5D II/50D combo on my trips, I have to take two chargers and two kinds
of batteries with me. Not a huge deal, but an annoying one for a travel photographer...
What's so EOSfunny about some of these complaints of lack of the AF capabilities; they come from a few photographers who praised heaven they have the ability to mount (manual focus!) Zeiss glass now They shouldn't even care about the use of AF it seems

How about using the 40D's AF in the new 50D...? Pretty disturbing to me... More so because Mr. Westfall has stated that the 40D AI Servo tracking is erratic at best.

I don't know if this is news for you, but most manual focus glass have AF-confirm, both the new Zeiss glass and that which is used with adapters

hmm that's nice to hear but did Mr Westfall reall say this about the 40D?, So far my 40D has been underwhelming in AI servo, but I am hoping it's just the 100-400L

He said no such thing.
He said that the 5D AF system is better suited to AI Servo than the 40D AF system. And why would anyone find that surprising? The 5D has all 15 AF points bunched together in the middle, including multiple high precision AF points. In contrast, the 40D has only 9 AF points --- only 1 of which is high precision, and the rest are spread far out across the frame.
Westfall was just stating that the 5D's AF layout is better suited for AI Servo than the 40D's. Why is that disturbing?

It's puzzling more than disturbing. The 5D AF is better suited for AI Servo, but it only offers 4 fps. The 50D AF is not as well suited for AI Servo, yet it offers 6.3 fps.
Has some management guy in Canon lost his marbles
Or can it be because the 40D/50D AF is really not as great as what some think? See here

It is a tad askew. It seems like an alleged "sports" camera like a 40D would benefit from having a 5D's AF system. And an alleged "studio" camera like the 5D would be better off with the 40D's.
Except from the link above: ...They have the technology to blow the competition away by adapting the new 50D sensor tech in a full frame format and just easing off a little on the megapixels....The image quality on the 5d1 was so good that it's still as good as the new NikonD700 even though the Nikon is 3 years younger....
This means, since I already have 5d, more reason for me to wait for the 5d-III.
