Dont' run me out of town for being an idiot, but I want to challenge a basic assumption I see here:

Are we sure that the Hlighlight Tone Priority function doesn't affect raw data? Having that setting on makes the lowest ISO setting ISO 200. Manual describes it as expanding dynanic range. Seem to to me that that can't be done in RAW processing, but what do I know?

(On a related note, does anyone know if the "Auto Lighting Optimizer" function [C.Fn II-4] modifies RAW data itself or does it just worko on jpegs?)

yeah it shows up in even pre-demosaic RAW tools.

I'm sure the next weeks will filled with news of bits and bugs. But let's not forget to go out and take photographs with this fine upgrade to an amazing camera!

HTP does affect the raw data, it was discovered when the 40d was released. It did not suffer from the black spots however.

Lucid -

Good stuff you've been posting with the 5D2. I think it will be a worthy upgrade to my 30D! Nice to see local stuff too.

It has been shown to occur with HTP off in any case, so moot point.

I have not been able to reproduce this phenomenon and I always have HTP turned off. Some other people over at DPR have also been unable to get black dots. This makes me wonder if it was a bad batch of sensors or processors that is causing this.
I have spent several hours playing with it and thank goodness no spots. This was before the HTP possibility. It was recommended to me that I may not see them till I zoom in to 400-700% But I have seen them in posted images that were 100% crop although the images were terrible captures with odd settings apparently used.
I think the HTP idea was a good try, it appeared to work for at least one person.
Never noticed black dots in any 40D images but was never looking for them.

It must be set to movie+stills from the camera menu.Then...

Turn on Live View with top left button. Aim camera and press AF-On to focus. Then press set button to record. The set button is the little button in the middle of the big control wheel on the back of camera.

steve

No need to set aperture, shutter speed, ISO cos they don't work!

HTP does alter RAW data, as far as anyone has found out none of the other stuff does and even HTP affects it only becuase it has set the cam for 1 stop different ISO than metering thinks it is and sets the flag to signal this. So it HTP does, but seemingly not in any meaningful way and seemingly none of the other stuff does at all. I think you need DPP to have ALO work for RAW since it is not in the data, but I haven't looked.

Had not noticed any dots and tried, but had HP and NR turned off. Turned them on and the dots appeared when shooting Holiday lights. Guess they will remain off until Canon comes up with a true fix.

In another forum, a member advised he printed the equivalent of a 16x20 section and they were visible.

Any settings you make are for the still images that you may happen to shoot while in video mode. No settings (Aperture, Shutter or ISO) are manually controllable for video.
