Having gone thru most of the 174 pages, the thread was started to talk about specs and other technical information. Having to sift thru 10 pages of "I got my camera today" is rather pointless and doesn't tell anyone anything. I think we all know, the camera is not available in great numbers. I don't think we need 10 pages to tell us that.

But whatever, if that's what blows your hair back. I ordered mine 11/14 and I still don't have it.

Actually, the information about where people ordered their camera from and where is helpful. It helped me decide where to buy from.

I placed an order for my 5d II yesterday at wolf camera.com. Did an online chat today with a CS rep and was told it'll be two weeks or earlier before they receive another shipment. No taxes, free shipping, not bad

Yeah good luck with that - knowing when they get a next shipment in is only good if you know (a) How many and (b) where you are in the list.

Let us know what really happens. Wolf, Ritz, Cameraworld...they're all one company, so would expect that what happens at Ritz, happens at Wolf, and the Ritz stories we're hearing are somewhat less optimistic than you heard from Wolf CS. As to sales tax, Wolf has lots of retail locations. If they have any in your state, they are obliged to collect sales tax. At least that's the law in most states.

Re propriety of shipping/receiving comments in this thread, I would prefer a separate thread on this topic also. If you don't want to read it, then, you wouldn't have to. For some of us with outstanding orders, what we read about availability can be useful info. For example, it seems that just about all the local shops have received at least a few cameras, yet my local store says they have not yet had a word from Canon on a 5D2 shipment.

Not being totally resistent to the psychology of recession, this makes me wonder if my shop might be on credit hold with Canon for past due invoices. It also makes me wonder if my $500 deposit might leave me as just another creditor in the event of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Had a great day in NYC trying out the 5D Mark II. Wasn't too hard to adapt to modified button placements from 5D. Overall it is a worthwhile upgrade.

Far better LCD.
Clearly improved high ISO noise performance.
Feels "good in the hand".
Fantastic to be able to shoot 21mp with such an unobtrusive camera.
Focus seemed responsive and sure--even at night in Times Square.
3 custom settings very helpful
Shot over 400 frames and about 8 clips--battery reads 2/3 full.
Movie mode is easy to use--useful to me for very short clips. Sandisk III handled .movs okay
Sensor cleaning makes me feel good--but will have to see if it really works!

The images were opened with default settings in CS4 with no other processing/sharpening.

Canon 16-35L 2.8
Newstand is ISO 200 1/40th f3.2
Times Square ISO 1000 1/60th f3.5

What did you think of the three custom settings? How did they work? I'm guess preset ISO/Ap/Shutter?

The custom settings are user defined--giving you the ability to rapidly prep for a particular situation. For example, I shoot panoramas using full manual, ISO 100, and mirror lock-up. I now just turn the dial to "C1" and I'm set.

How is the AF of the 5D Mark II compared to the AF of the original 5D? I had trouble with AF with my 5D in low light

Shadow noise seems better than the 5D. I don't like to use flash, so I've relied on the low light capability of the 5D and now, the 5D mark II. When I know I'm going to shoot in very dark places--like a reception--I'll often add the ST-E2 Speedlight transmitter. The unit is small and sits in the flash shoe mount. It's like a flash without the flash. It just puts out the pulse for focus. Works great.

All this discussion about discussions reminds me of meetings at work. I thought this stuff wasn’t supposed to be mind-numbing!

As far as ordering: I ordered the body only from Ritzcamera.com on 11/15 and no status whatsoever since. So I also ordered the body only from Adorama and Onecall on 12/2 just to see if I could improve my odds. I'm hoping I'll get notified when the first order ships in time to cancel the other two orders. If not, I should be able to sell the other one without a problem while they're still in high demand.

I've given up trying to find out where I'm at "in line" and status of shipments to the dealers, not worth the frustration. Don't need any more stress for the holidays!

But I do agree, seperate forums for order/delivery and the camera itself would be helpful.

William, Glad to hear you are getting yours. Did you order the kit or the body?

I have it!! Woohooo!!!

It's the kit (with lens).

I do notice the shutter sound is kind of "grindy", and definitely not as audibly appealing as the 5D, but I haven't really used it to make any other comments about unimportant things like image quality.

FedEx guy just dropped mine off. Ordered from Cameraland 2 days ago and tehy charged like 20 bucks for 2nd day. Many thanks to the poster reporting that they had tehm in stock and were reputable!!! First impressions while the battery is charging. Feels and looks nice - there are subtle cosmetic changes that are an improvement such as the function dial. I like where the top function buttons have been moved and regrouped I wish that the AF selection had been grouped with the metering as I change that far more often than the drive. Question - what are the 4 small holes next to the eyepiece? Bottom right corner. Oh - and the 24-105 actually comes with the lens hood! Is that a first? Never having bought the kits before I was always grumbling that Canon made you buy the hood seperate...

Are there still people around that don't recognize that the 5D is an xxD with a FF sensor? Expecting 1D performance from an xxD camera is crazy. I hope you people aren't also sending money to that Nigerian prince!

The truth is, as usual, somewhere in between. There is no question that the 5D's shutter has been much more robust than the one from the 30, 40, and 50D series. The same is true for the mirror assembly.

Not as robust as the much more expensive models, but somewhere in between. The extra size and mass of the more expensive, heavier cameras also help to damp the sound and vibration of the shutter and mirror, making the difference seem more pronounced than it really is.

FYI, for those that said they didn't get a warranty card for their lens in their kit box, I can report that I have TWO warranty cards in my kit box, one for the body and one for the lens.

The 4 holes I believe is the mic for recording audio when you're shooting video. And no, the 24-105 is an L lens and all L lenses come with hoods & pouches.

Sorry to pile onto the purchasing part of the thread, but did anyone else order from Crutchfield? As of yesterday they claimed they hadn't even gotten their initial order in yet?!? Seems odd given that most other retailers got at least some volume last week.

All of the L lenses (that I can think of at the moment) come with their lens hood, so that should follow thru any kit including an "L" lens.

Wasn't this true for the original 5D kit?

...another soul waiting on Amazon to deliver a new toy!

I seem to recall when I bought my 17-40 and the 24-105 they were without. Found a Chinese source for OEM Canon lens shades so I got a fairly decent price. Never bought a kit before so unknown on that front...
