Just got my 5D Mark II tonight. I have one caveat I'd like to share that doesn't warrant its own thread.
When I'm viewing the LCD, the my middle finger of my left hand kept on hitting the aperture-stop-down button on the other side of the camera. This would annoyingly cause the camera to stop previewing, and if my 580exII was on top, to start poping the flash. I thought the camera was a bit foobar until I figured out what was happening.
Since my 40D has the play button on the bottom of the camera instead of the 5D Mark II's left side, the pressures involved, and the distance my thumb from the play button are different. Different so much that the problem never happened for me on the 40D.
I will most likely be buying a battery grip to get around this problem in the future, that or stop chimping on the nice, new LCD.
My dealer called me a few minutes ago and my 5D Mark II body has arrived. Can't wait for tomorrow's delivery. Getting it for the equivalent of $2,477.70 after taxes.
I don't know about the button, but the sound of the shutter is similar to the old 5D's. I like the crisp sound of the 40D shutter better... it feels faster. The 5D2's shutter sound is laggy like the old 5D's... I don't know if you guys know what I mean.
There is no such thing as a free lunch. The mirror mechanism is smaller in the 40D, larger in the 5D--but the 5D does not have the stronger driving mechanism of the 1Ds.
One of the reasons the 5D costs less than the 1Ds is that it doesn't have the same heavy-duty mirror drive, but a lower-cost version similar to the xxD cameras...but driving a more massive mirror than the xxD cameras.

Are there still people around that don't recognize that the 5D is an xxD with a FF sensor? Expecting 1D performance from an xxD camera is crazy. I hope you people aren't also sending money to that Nigerian prince!

I was doing some ISO testing with my 5D2 just to get familiar with the new camera and I thought I would post the file sizes at different ISO speeds for anyone that might be interested. All these results are at the 21.1 mp setting:
ISO 50 - RAW - 23.6 MB Large Fine Jpeg - 4.30 MB
ISO 100 - RAW - 22.4 MB Large Fine Jpeg - 4.18 MB
ISO 200 - RAW - 22.9 MB - Large Fine Jpeg - 4.8 MB
ISO 400 - RAW - 23.8 MB - Large Fine Jpeg - 5.58 MB
ISO 800 - RAW - 24.9 MB - Large Fine Jpeg - 5.97 MB
ISO 1600 - RAW - 26.1 MB - Large Fine Jpeg - 5.84 MB
ISO 3200 - RAW - 27.7 MB - Large Fine Jpeg - 5.75 MB
ISO 6400 - RAW - 30.2 MB - Large Fine Jpeg - 7.44 MB
ISO 12800 - RAW - 33.2 MB - Large Fine Jpeg - 9.32 MB
ISO 25600 - RAW - 37.4 MB - Large Fine Jpeg - 12.0 MB ...Show more →
You did not specify, but I presume you shot the exact same scene with each ISO setting. Therefore, if the file is larger at one ISO than another, there must be more "data" present. Since the scene is unchanged, the additional data can only be noise, right? With that starting assumption, it appears that ISO 100 is the designed sensitivity of the sensor, and any change from that--even to ISO 50--introduces more noise into the image. That says that ISO 50 is only a fallback for instances where you do not have time to put on an ND filter.
Got mine yesterday 12/3 from J&R.
I was #9 on their list. Ordered 9/19
Have not been able to even open the box since I'm in Baltimore and my new 5D Mark II is at home in New Jersey

Can we keep the memory card discussion out of this thread?
You find knowing what number people are on the list and where they are getting their camera from to be more interesting?
Seeing as this is a the master thread, I sure would rather read what memory card is required and would work best. It's a question I was asking myself for 2 weeks.
But by all means, if you find hearing how Ritz didn't send a camera to a person who was number x on the list, then yes, we can keep the helpful, factual information down to a minimum.

The camera's availability is MUCH more along the lines of this topic compared to a general memory card question that can be handled in a completely different section.
But, this is typical for FM, and the lack of moderation as well by the admins.

Well- truth be told, this cam is going to be backordered for a long while. Probably until february or March. Good luck, sorry to hear it's so difficult to deal with them.
I'd say you're dead on with that call. I called a couple of teh big boys and was told their current pre-order lists are far above their deliveries and are guesstimating Feb - May for anyone getting on the list *now*. At that point I trolled the boards and lucked onto teh post where someone mentioned Camera Land in NYC had a few. They were out of bodies so I had to snag a kit. For reference they got 2 bodies and 4 kits which I'm betting is the ratio sellers are getting from the reports coming in. Since I'll be keeping my 5D, I'm probably just going to keep the lens also since it really is a very good match for the full frame.

?
Having gone thru most of the 174 pages, the thread was started to talk about specs and other technical information. Having to sift thru 10 pages of "I got my camera today" is rather pointless and doesn't tell anyone anything. I think we all know, the camera is not available in great numbers. I don't think we need 10 pages to tell us that.
But whatever, if that's what blows your hair back. I ordered mine 11/14 and I still don't have it.

Interesting - it appears that as the noise goes up the file size increases. Since the JPG's are compressed it means teh noise is random and a significant amount of it otherwise it would compress better.

That's exactly the way it is for the 5D. "Native" ISO is 100. It is well documented that other ISO will cause a slight degradation in IQ and DR. As far as the documentation - you'd have to go waaaaay back in the FM threads when the 5D was released.
