There's a reasonable and recently updated 5d2 vs 1dsMk3 test using the same RAW converter with 100% crops here:

luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=29821&st=0#entry240105

There's color noise that's not present in the 1dsMk3 files esp in the dark areas, yet the 5d2 is picking up more details there.

Color fidelity to me looks slightly more natural on the 1dsMk3. It will be interesting when the high ISO comparisons are up.

Nothing to cancel an order over

yeah, just like, i think, with the 50D.
I think it's the new higher transmission CFA, they reduce color discrimination and require a greater saturation boost to bring back to nominal levels and induce more chroma noise while at the same time lowering luma noise.

or so i think....

I understand you used it colloquially. Strange, you didn't know about rapidshare limitations.

Oh good, I didn't want you taking away the wrong impression and becoming offended - there's too much of that already on the world-wide-web, don't you think?

You're quite correct. I'm really not familiar with that service: my assistants handle file exchanges using the in-house servers, but they have the holiday off.

sorry to have taken up your time, and thanks for the valuable lesson

cheers

holy cow I like this performance!
and at highish ISO too with no NR.

all that follow are 100% crops, used DNG to convert so CS3 ACR could read the files, used zero luma NR in ACR and none in CS3, used some basic +14 chroma NR (ACR default is like 25 or something so this is not much), did some levels and sharpening and all that jazz but NO NR.

keep in mind a wintry overcast late afternoon, so lighting was VERY flat.
also they were all handheld (IS used though)

Problem with Derryck's test is he used DPP for the 5DII and ACR for the 1Ds. Really need to see both using CS4 ACR 5.2 with the same "Adobe Standard" profile.

As I said, he updated the test and used the same RAW converter (DPP).

We know the performance of the 1ds3 sensor and the 5d2 isn't far off. I don't think it will outperform the 1ds3 in noise performance, perhaps the 5d2 is around 1/2 a stop behind.

1/2 stop is large, why in the world would it be half stop behind the 1dsmkiii if the reduced the CFA and improved the amps?
not that i have a 1dsmkiii to compare with, but it sounds strange

link to an ISO 1600 .CR2 file, it's the middle one from the 100% crop set I posted above.

Why would the 5D2 be behind the 1DS3 at all? Doesn't it have a slightly improved sensor + better image processor? Anything else to consider?

This thread is too long for me to keep up... is the LCD on this 5D mk2 display accurate color as the older 30D and 5D? cause I was disappointed at the new 50D and 40D LCD color production . Thanks!

I agree.

Looking at other RAW samples that are now available at base ISO I can't see that same level of chroma noise at all with NR on. User experience is saying 1 stop better noise performance than 1ds3.

I think they do it on purpose so you will buy their internet speed up program.

Chuck Westfall from Canon stated that the 5D2 sensor performance is actually a slight bit better than the 1DS3.

I believe it is the exact same LCD as the 50D.
I think the LCD on the 50D is pretty darn good personally. Remember your preview that you are seeing on your LCD is the embedded JPG and takes on all Picture Styles and other settings you have in camera, regardless if shooting raw or not.

Perhaps it is because I cut my dSLR teeth on the 20D and 1Ds, plus the small LCDs from the late '90s P&S (which if you used too much you drained the batteries in no time flat) I just don't use my LCD for much more then checking an occasional exposure. Other then that I have my LCDs turned off and very rarely chimp
