"Destined Evolution"

What an awkward phrase. Isn't "destined evolution" redundant? Should we be excited about evolution? Hasn't every release been a evolution?
Is the camera silhouette in the Japanese ad different than the current 5D?
So many questions and too many days to Photokina.

Yes. It is different. Only few days after month. Only 7 more now till NDA runs out, as far I know. That Canon started their marketing activities now imo means they will tell us evrything within the next 7 days.

Some predictions of the 5D Mk2 sensor resolution go as high as 20+ megapixels. At the moment I am using a lowly 40D but I am very keen to go full frame with the new 5D. However, I am beginning to wonder if my existing lenses are going to be happy at 21 megapixels or whatever it is, I'm wondering if they are going to be sharp enough. Am I going to have to budget for new lenses over the next couple of years?

I've got:

Sigma 12-24, Canon 24mm f1.4L, Canon 35mm f2, Canon 50mm f1.4, Canon 85mm f1.8, Canon 135mm f2L, Tokina 80-400mm, Nikkor 28mm f1.4, Nikkor 28mm f3.5 PC

For those who haven't seen the Japanese site. Possibly the 'best' picture of the new camera yet (nearly completely frame, though of course no detail).

Canon would HATE for us to buy new lenses. I'm sure they'll have a trade-in program.

OK, so why am I against a pop up flash? N.B. I don't know if the 5d2 does or doesn't have a flash, this is in general...

Canon, Nikon, et. al. use pop up flashes for the amateur market so the people won't have to buy external flashes. Fine, save some people some money. My needs, my wants, are different and driven by the following...

A pop up flash means (in almost ALL situations)

NO 100% VF
weather sealing is compromised
you have to use small lenses to get clearance. Put a 70-200 on that pop up and see how that's going to work in some situations. Possible? Yes. Good? No.
With Canon, it's a dumb device. No master control ala Nikon (this could change, but look at the 50d and you'll know the chance is between zero and none).

I don't shoot in the rain so the weather sealing is not as important for daily work, but it can't hurt. How many of you scream about how much you want this?

I shoot natural light or with professional lighting gear in the studio.... What's a pop up going to do for me? If I'm shooting architecture, will the pop up matter? No. Will it matter in a landscape? No. How about shooting sports (you wouldn't use a 5d, but)? It's not going to work. That's why they sell external flashes and that's why most people use external flashes.

The VF is important. A 100% VF means I save time and money. I don't have to worry (as much) about cropping or having to re-shoot because I know what the image will look like when I shoot it. I don't have to guess because Canon put a cheaper VF prism in the body, didn't align it properly (I've had several cameras, same model, with the VF all over the map). It's not just a wish, I use a 100% VF on my 1 series and I want a professional level camera in a small size that offers the same features. Impossible? Not at all. Is Canon too cheap? Probably. Gotta protect that 1 series...

Since Canon has, and (I expect may continue, to refuses to make a small professional camera that can be used for many general assignment situations and even personal travel or casual shooting, I'll continue to hope and be frustrated until I leave them. Selling over $20k in lenses alone would make it tough, at some point if another mfg makes what I want (none has yet, including the D700). I'll go. Why stay with a mfg that refuses to provide what can be done if another will? Doesn't make sense....

But, there's always PMA 09 when the 1 series gets released, and perhaps they'll have what I want then....

Someone made a funny comment about someone not having breakfast this morning. I don't know if that was for me, but I ate. I did only get about 4 hours sleep and I'm more likely to take someone's head off in this situation, so Sorry, mea culpa...

I understand what you're saying, but (a) I can't see Canon making the 1-series significantly smaller, with an optional vertical grip, anytime soon and (b) I can see built-in flash moving up the Canon model line, as it seems to be with Nikon putting it on the D300 and D700.

And while I now understand why you don't want built-in flash, I'm guessing that esp. since the release of the D700 Canon might figure that it's better not to lose a "features" battle between the 5D2 and the D700 (by not offering a flash when Nikon does offer it) than to win a "specs" battle (by having 100%VF coverage compared to the D700's 95%).

I don't know the answer to this: How many of Canon's non-1-series film SLRs had 100% VF coverage? Did the EOS3 (which everyone seems to think is what the 5D2 should be)? Just wondering.

Another vote for no popup flash. Bigger/brighter viewfinders (so you can see and focus the picture in the dark), and better high ISO performance are much more important to me so that I can get those magical shots in very low light situations.

The 5D was/is not an all-round well balanced camera. All the compromises in the design seemed geared to providing the highest IQ at the best possible price. Lots of "features" were sacrificed to achieve that goal. This formula worked. The 5D at 3 years old is still the reference to which other cameras are compared to for IQ. I personally hope the 5DII or 3D continues that tradition.

I would be happiest, frankly, with a modern digital remake of the new F-1n with true analog metering and contls, super bright viewfinder, mechanical shutter release, simple metering, slow frame rate, no lcd, and single point auto focus. The focus should be on the sensor, the resolution, color integrity, dynamic range and light gathering capability. The rest of the camera should make it as easy as possible for the photographer to take creative control of the picture taking experience.

Enough of the built-in-flash !?

Want one, buy D700 or any other entry/semi-pro level camera.

Do not want one, wait a week and see if Canon really added one...

EXACTLY!

+100

I "like" the 5d but I have never loved it; not even for a day. I've also owned 4, but it's just a tool to me, like a hammer. The camera has provided good/great IQ, but everything else is mediocre. :Period....

I like my "new" F-1 too and have been using it a lot again for the small size, but I LOVE my 1VHS, or stripped to a 1V.

I don't think a pop up flash will increase sales. Well maybe three but not enough to warrant it.

On the other hand digic4 and 21 megapixel will prove a total Nikon Killer.

This kind of comment is not only useless and unecessary, but borderline stupid.

Nice to see that top left and right sides of the camera are flat ... implying it doesn't have a dial and instead has weather sealed buttons like the 1 series. Whether this is the much wanted 3d/7d or just a nicer body for the 5D remains to be seen, very exciting either way.
