In theory you're right, however in practice....the 50D is hardly a D300 killer, it's simply got a couple of extra megapixels, but look at the hype it's received! The 5D replacement SHOULD be aiming at the D700....who wants to place a bet against me that it's just a 50D with a bigger sensor ?

Nice to see that top left and right sides of the camera are flat ... implying it doesn't have a dial and instead has weather sealed buttons like the 1 series. Whether this is the much wanted 3d/7d or just a nicer body for the 5D remains to be seen, very exciting either way.
Very true and the fact that Canon are deliberatly hyping the camera now tells me that they intend to really pull something special out of the hat.
No way they would set up anticipation like that if they thought there was going to be an anti climax.
Will the new 5D just be a bigger 50D? i'm thinking with the new game rules that the new 5D will indeed be a smaller 1d's. Just with a better sensor, for now.

Right on.
Canon understands all too well the megapixel thirst which largely drives both the P&S and dSLR markets. High ISO also sells well.
After all, the old 5D concept &marketing formula worked well for Canon. Why would they abandon it now in the case of 5DII ?
On the discussion that "Destined Evolution" is awkward or uninspired, I actually had a thought on"Evolution" a while back.
With pretty much the death of film cameras, how long can Canon go with D? 1D, 5D, 50D, etc. People talk about the 3D, the 7D, the 60D. Eventually it is all just numbers--the D is irrelevant--everyone knows the cameras are digital.
So my prediction is that tease will morph and make the E more prominent.
At least they will introduce 2 bodies and change from "evolution" to "revolution" at the end. They might call it 5E and 5R. Or they might give it a name instead of a number:
Like Canon Eos "Eclipse",
