The best rumor comes from a site that predicted the exact 50D specs before it was announced. I find it very plausible. And it's an evolution and nothing ground-breaking.

And the bad news is photokina releases have been announced and no news of a 5D upgrade.
Things are going sour.
Take a few minutes and read the countless number of posts around yours...Canon is going to release something, most likely the 5D successor.
What that winds up being is anyone's guess...but there isn't any shortage of speculation. Why people can't just wait another week and see what they release is beyond me..
Me neither. Nikon were mad to put a flash on the camera. It really spoils the whole camera. It's an embarrassment. Couldn't possibly be useful. Adds so much weight and cost. $500 at least. Makes weather sealing impossible. Terrible for fill. Makes a $400 dedicated flash optional. Thank God Canon understands that serious users hate features and love having to carry extra batteries, chargers, accessories. And especially we love those wide deep shadows caused by flash heads which are six inches or more from the lens. Thick black shadows around everybody's chins and noses are seriously more professional. A flash that works off the camera battery! What a load of crap! That would really get in the way of my creativity.
Meanwhile if the 5D2 has no flash, I will unfortunately have to get a D700 instead, even though Nikon is completely wrong, and Canon is so right.

fingers crossed that "the future of photography" isn't "slightly upgrading everything"
No, if you purchase the new Canon, you get 5 playboy models, 2 Sports Cars and a signed deal with a Magazine of your own choosing for a life time.. See, THAT's Evolution and future of photography

Not dumb at all. I use one now, and have for years now, right along side 1 series cameras, to make my living. I guess it's only dumb for you since your needs are closer to what a rebel or xxd offer, so in that case you'll be fine....buy a few...
I want a professional level camera, with no excuses, in a small size body. Is that hard to understand?
Yes. Okay. I hope you might get what you wish. Concerning me its easier:
I can do all even pro stuff with my 30D. I hit its borders just in two cases till now. The strong noise in Iso >=800 and a max of 108 DPI for 24x36" prints. 50D serves both problems. 5D2 will even more. Thats why I am already feel good.
If the price fits my pocket, I will have technically freedom for the coming few years.
I don't know...18MPixel with native ISO 6400 sounds like a very nice imaging device. Add new 19 point AF (which is likely the 'somewhere between the 1D and XXD series' that people have been clamoring for) and it's a VERY solid camera. I honestly wouldn't expect all that much more in a camera that is marketed towards very advanced amateurs and professionals who want a smaller body.
I mean, seriously, that is essentially BETTER than the 1DsII. The only thing it wouldn't have over the 1Ds II is the extra AF points.

+1
After a dedicated MLU button, onboard flash is the first thing I'd wish were on my 1DsII.

That's right pal. And you're doing what exactly? I think you come along, every time, and argue with people. Our needs and wants are different.. Period.
The existence of a pop-up flash does not detract from a camera; it adds to its utility.
No, it really doesn't. Not for what I want, and if you want it, fine. I don't. I've used a pop up flash on a camera twice in the last 10 years. once was a P&S, once was by accident.
Pop-up flash can be quite effectively used for fill duty. I shot a daytime outdoor wedding a couple years ago (informal - last minute favor for a friend) with my 20D. I only had one flash unit with me, as I wasn't planning to shoot the wedding. When that flash went belly up in the middle of the shoot, I just removed it from the camera and popped up the built-in flash. Worked perfectly well for fill -- results no different from the shots taken with the external flash.
I currently have three dedicated flash units at my disposal, wireless/remote fire capability, diffusers, reflectors, etc. But I would applaud Canon if they include a pop-up flash on the 5D replacement.
I used my pop up flash in half a dozen shootings because I hadn´t my external with me. Those pics are just good for keeping the moment. Rubbish from photographic POV. My external was used 8 times within the last two years. 90% against the cieling. I want ISO 6400 to shoot AL. First gear I sell will be my flash. What I can not shoot freehand with 6400 (in useable IQ, of course) has to be shot on tripod (I use it 2 times a year). If not possible I most prefere not to do the pic.

old school had the F=1 pro then an A-1 pretty sure pros used an A-1 so hopefully this is a DSLR answer to an A-1 or an eos3 since it doesnt show a knob I will assume more weatheization...maybe a pellicle mirror maybe this is an 5DRS

The built in flash on the D700 acts as a master for a wireless setup, your opinion is not only wrong but also very uninformed, I know PJ's using this functionality every single day, it's canon who make you use an expensive 580ex on camera to fire your wireless slaves even when you don't want the on camera light. An on board wireless master (forget the rest) is an extremely useful and pro orientated tool. As for the nonsense about weather sealing, that was only ever canon propaganda, the D700 has pro level sealing.

welcome to the club. :-)
Those specs you mentioned are from a different source then were the fitting 50Ds came from. Digic III would be fine fotr me. But I do not think Canon puts it in any new gear.
What an awkward phrase. Isn't "destined evolution" redundant? Should we be excited about evolution? Hasn't every release been a evolution?
Is the camera silhouette in the Japanese ad different than the current 5D?
So many questions and too many days to Photokina.
If it is 21 megapixel and digic4 (which it will be) is as good as it promises to be then the new 5D will cream all that has gone before in terms of image quality.
We are about to enter a new phase in digital cameras. Impetus provided by Nikon with Canon winning the day once again.
