I love the Internet. There's probably 3 people that actually have the camera and have gotten the error and another 300 who claim it also.

Do you have a 50D?

The OP at dpreview is either flat out lying or he isn't. The scenario sounds quite reasonable and the possibility that a lower % of gold was tried also sounds plausible. It's possible posters are lying when they report ERR 99 but that seems unlikely. When nVidia was accused of faulty video cards many people dismissed it too. I just took delivery on a 50D and you can bet I'll be firing off a lot of test shots in these first few days. In the last several years of 10D, 20D, 40D, MKII usage I've had three or four Err99 out of all the thousands of shots I've taken. If I get any in the next few days the camera will go back but hopefully that won't be necessary. No Err 99 at this point with maybe 50-100 actuations.

Santa, what firmware version does your 50D have? Please keep us posted if the err99 happens to you also.

I'll see what happens this weekend. I will have my 50D and 40D at volleyball and football. So far I've had no issue with the 50D other than trying to keep the LCD clean from my drool. The screen was not one of the buying points for me but it is much nicer than I expected. The lens micro-adjust is a huge benefit. I'll check out the high ISO tonight.

The gold wears off the contacts pretty quickly if you're a frequent lens changer. I have older EOS bodies with the copper showing--gold gone--and they never give error messages. The less-gold story sounds unreasonable as the cause for errors.

So far my 50D has taken about 150 error & weirdness free pictures, let's hope it stays that way. Nice camera!

Looks like Adobe has officially release the update to ACR:

Look like they have tweaked the 50D profiles for better colors (as opposed to ACR 4.6 beta/rc), but unfortunately the noise levels remain much the same. So for best IQ with 50D high ISO images, DPP is still the best option...

Sent a mail to Canon Support Online asking about the story of the gold on the contacts ando so on.

Here´s the answer they gave me

"Thank you for contacting Canon product support, and for your inquiry about the EOS 50D.

There have not been any issues with the 50D.

We hope this information is helpful to you. Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

Sincerely,

Erik

Also, I've heard a lot about the 50D's extra resolution not buying you too much at smaller apertures. From I've been able to determine the 50D at f/16 beats the 40D at f/5.6 using a 50 mm f/1.4 USM lens (note, base conditions for this test are identical to that described in the link above).

Regards,

Joe Kurkjian

that f/16 doesn't look better to me than the 40D at f/5.6 at all.
the f/11 does look better than the 40D at anything though, and since the vast majority of shots are taken at f/11 or less, the vast, vast majority of shots, at least at lower ISO, will gain detail with the 50D.

The effect of aperture on FPS occurs even with AF off.
AF tracking is a separate issue.

EBH

two issues then
anyway i never notice the aperture one since I virtually only use burst mode when shooting within a stop of wide open (although for handheld landscape HDR i'm sure this issue might come up, but i haven't really tried that yet)

I did some comparative tests between my 40D and new 50D. I believe that the 40D actually has less noise and better image quality at ISO 3200.

Don't be so quick to react to these internet things... It's the one or two people that have an err 99 that make a fuss... few things are mentioned about the tons of people that have no problems.

Mike, thanks for posting

How did you process these images? Are these RAW converted JPEG's or in-camera JEPG's? What firmware version does your 50D have?

These are JPEG's. All noise reduction turned off in both cameras. My 50D has firmware 1.02.

I have taken a close look at them. When you uprez the 40D files to 15MP (size of 50D files) there is little difference. Maybe the 50D shows a bit more banding and color noise (especially in the darker parts/shadows of the frame) while the 40D images show less detail because of the uprezzing. BTW The 50D ISO 1600 shot seems to be missing

I wouldn't believe anything a Canon tech support person says considering they also refused to acknowledge any AF problem with the 1D3. Nevertheless, I've read elsewhere (since I don't know these things) that tin (the reported "cost saving" element used in place of gold which is allegedly causing the err99s) is actually a BETTER conductor than gold. Gold is only used because it's better at resisting corrosion. So, assuming THAT is true this err99 story would seem to fall apart. All I know is I have a 50D and haven't seen an err99 yet.
