the f/11 does look better than the 40D at anything though, and since the vast majority of shots are taken at f/11 or less, the vast, vast majority of shots, at least at lower ISO, will gain detail with the 50D.
Well, all I can say is you didn't look very carefully, sorry. If you take another look starting at the highest spatial frequencies and working back-wards, then you see exactly what I said above.

Posted this in the other thread about this obsurd rumor. If people are having Err99 problems it most likely has nothing to do with the gold content of the contacts.
Jim, I'm wondering if there might be an issue with low power conditions.
I tested the body I purchased in store with their random who-knows-how-well-charged battery, experienced one err99 and lots of <busy> hangups. Came back the next day and shipped my grip with fully-charged batts on and haven't seen any problems since.
I may let one run down to see if I can replicate the condition.
My camera came from a local camera shop that sells a bunch of these bodies. Wonder if there is just a particular area of the US that is starting to receive 1.0.2... I would guess that my vendor just got this one within the last week or so. Regardless, I only got 1.0.1. Another thing to note... I bought a grip with mine, so I am always running 2 batteries. I realize the voltage should be the same, but just wondering if that throws another factor into the mix. So far, 300+ shots, no ERR99's.

I have a one week old 50D (Amazon) with FW 1.0.1 and have not experienced any ERR99 or other problems. Today I shot until my battery said empty and it worked fine until it completely farted out. So I doubt it's a low voltage issue or thin gold for that matter. My 10 year old EOS 3's gold is completely scratched off on the contact area of the lens mount and everything works fine.
Not sure if brought up, but, Best Buy has the 50D "Kit" with yet another 28-135mm lens (could sell it?) for $1599. I just got a 12% off anythign in store rewards coupon and was thinkign of getting the kit with it. I am just worried these might be firmware 1.01 units. Has anyone picked one up from Best Buy yet? What firmware did yours have? Thanks.

What makes you think a firmware 1.0.1 camera is something to worry about? There has been several people post pics and testimonies to firmware 1.0.1 cameras working great, including myself.
Maybe you should be worrying about getting a camera with 1.0.2.

Isnt it just a matter of downloading the latest firmware?
My 50D was also in the retail kit with the 28-135 and firmware 1.0.1. I'm wondering if 1.0.2 added some features or fixed some bugs. Oddly, v 1.0.2 is not on Canon's site where it should be. Perhaps they are about to release 1.0.3 or something. Mine is working fine regardless; it is mostly curiousity.
Does the grip improve perfomance in any way other than battery life, and how many frames are you all getting? I don't see anything about higher framing rates with the grip as occurs with the D300.
Many thanks, I downloaded the "Beta" update, followed instructions and it worked fine. I get a message telling me I am using a Beta version - no problem - I can now use CS3 with my 50D Raw files.

I've had mine less than a week, shot about 300 photos friday night at a football game and got the ERR99 twice. My firmware is 1.0.2. I removed the batteries for about 5 seconds, put them back in and everything worked fine. Didn't experience any corrupted photos during this. It didn't happen while shooting continuous but happened when I was following a receiver down the field and tried to take the picture. The shutter delayed a bit and then gave me the error message. I am going to clean the contacts on my lens today and shoot some more test shots to see what happens. This is the first time I have experienced any errors on my cameras and I have owned the 20D and 40D prior to the 50D.

So far the only ones I have seen that have Err99 problems are the 1.0.2 Firmware. Need to hear from others to see if there is a trend.
Only thing the grip does is increase your battery life for shooting, ergomomics, and vertical shutter.. No increase in FPS.
You have any samples yet Gochugogi? any thoughts on it? I've been on boards with you for years, you do some good work. Whatever happened to the mighty pepper?
I was one of the earlier reports of an Err99. Mine did it again yesterday and using my 17-55. Was using that the last time it happened. Pulled battery and back in business. I have taken over 1000 shots and the only times Err99 has occured was with my 17-55, and I've only used it for about 30 shots. Coincidence? Forgot to mention, mine is firmware 1.0.1
Firmware 1.0.1 here. I've had one Err99, when using my 70-200 F2.8 non IS. I was shooting sports, in AI Servo. Pulled the battery out and it worked fine. Has not happened since.
Recieved 50D Friday retail kit with 28-135 and firmware 1.0.2. About 250 shots so far, got one error 99 today with 18-55 IS lens. This is the first error 99 I have ever gotten with an X0D body, but did have a hard error 99 with a 1DMKII that required a trip to Canon to fix. One more error 99 and back it goes, I'm not putting up with it.
