p.8 #1 · 7D imminent?

i consider a canon 3D, 5-6 fps, 14-16 FF sensor, less options and menu capability, advanced features, nice AF but not 1 series on 3000-3500 $ price would please a lot of photographers...canon may loose some 1Ds and 1D sale but will will keep some who like nikon's D3 and want to swich, will determine many to spend little more and upgrade from 40D, people sho nevver would pay 5000 or 7000 for a brand new 1 series, and will make those who considered some used 1 series gear to put the money in canon's pocket not those who sell used...Show more

and here is a post from first page of this thread, 2 days ago i think...i said the same thing before in few ocasions, this camera make sense...i really hope canon listens

I will read a technical discussion any day in preference to yet another third hand rumor.

My point was actually not that I don't like a technical discussion (I am an engineer so I love them) but rather that the threads change from discussion of a rumor to discussion of the extrapolated technical what ifs associated with the rumor.

Further to that thread at dpreview, it is said Canon will announce a new flagship at photokina but it won't go on sale until PMA 2009. Taking a leaf out of Nikon's book, and announcing a product months before it's ready. Probably a preemptive strike. Make the specs so impressive it'll take the wind out of Nikon's D3X sails and get people waiting to see how it performs.

The principle wouldn't surprise me. They did just that with the announcement of the 200/2 and 800/5.6. That said, a flagship model is usually a 1 series and I expect that one to be available before the Olympics, not afterwards.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

I actually prefer the 35mm film look to the 35mm FF sensor look. The old 35mm film image looks more color-correct. The sky is a nice blue, and the whites are white. The other image has a yellow color cast to it - too warm for my taste - although that improves the grass color.

For the benefit of those who may have been missed this little bit of info about Canon's CMOS full frame sensors. It is not new but I am sure lots of folks might have overlooked it.

No. But he only seems to get info a few days before the event.

chacun à son goût
--------------------
rarely used in french parlance, you will hear more "chacun son gout.." or "chacun son truc" (to each his own).

Quite common as a proverb/saying: "les gouts et les couleurs..." meaning the same, there is no accounting for individual tastes and color choices.

Class in recess!

I would imagine that if Northlight has picked up this rumor, it has subsequently been reported as fact on other sites and the cyclical referencing/belief/gospel nonsense is complete.

All I know, and we can all take this to the bank, is that one way or another, Canon will release a new camera this year or next and it will probably be underwhelming.

Yakim, Canon now claim the 1D III is the best AFing camera of all 1 series, so they already have their Olympic cameras.

on top of this FF camera might not be preffered to a crop 1.3 FOV camera for olympics... you're not doing studio work, nor weddings nor landscape...u need best reach for sport...

another reason is after the failure of 1D3 AF sistem (even just in some specific circumstances and lightning conditions), even if canon will launch a new camera for olympics right now there will not be many who will risk another AF issue model... at least with the current 1d3 users know it;s weaknesses... getting a new camera with presumed unknown issues right before olympics would be insane...

canon somehow lost users trust and those users will take much more caution in future models...

would u buy a brand new and unknown camera only by specification 1-2 months before a major event u're assigned to i don;t think so...

And that would totally butcher the flagship 1Ds Mk III sales. Why would Canon do such a stupid thing?

People shell out for the 40D when the rebel series does the same thing just as well

No a 5D II would not butcher 1Ds III sales amongst those that need a 1Ds III, it would only butcher sales amongst those that were forced to buy this as there were no alternatives with a good enough feature set, build or AF. So a lot of serious amateurs would now have a viable alternative and sales of the 5D II would more than make up any loss of revenue of the 1Ds III sales. Who cares how revenue pie is made up, as long as it gets larger. The 1Ds III would still be preferred by working pros that need the largest files possible, the tank like build, the dual cards, etc. Sales of all 1 series cameras have been inflated due to the lack of consumer models with good AF, sealing or speed. If Canon had built a 3D years ago, many of us would never have had to fork out for a 1D II for example. But SJ's and PJ's would still have bought the 1D II and had the 3D as a backup.

yep, because many need that slightly better AF, ergonomy, better build, etc... i had 20D as my first camera, 5D now and aiming for a better one...never go for a 1Ds, overkill for me both specifications and price, same for 1D, don't like crop FOV as i use it allround, indoors widest angle possible, etc...

on the other hand i shot with 400D, 350D, nikon d40, etc...never accomodate any of them, way u change iso, aperture, way u focus and take the picture and so on i consider cripple way....

there will allways be guys who need as many FPS as possible, 1.3 FOV, or as many pixels as possible, twin card slots, more options regarding way of acieving different settings (af point, iso, aperture, shutter, etc..) brick 1 series build, all the pro extra features u will get only on a 1 series...

a 3D camera make sense and being a cheaper one the volume selling will compensate losses on higher series and price tags... and do not forget that many cameras sold mean even more sells on accesories, lenses, flash units and so on... by far selling more cameras is more priofitable than selling just few...

for example let;s look on medium format digital ones...does ANY of the small exclusivist brands even get close in matter of profits to "consumer" producers in the same domain

i consider pro cameras less profitable but usefull and that because they promote the company brand and they show those millions who bring the profits that when they will want or need to go further, to better products, they are there... this is the main reason for a company to struggle offer high end products, not profit they make out of it directly...

It's not unrealistic to begin the countdown to the 5D replacement.

I remember reading about someone who claimed that they were a Canon rep a few weeks ago (And I posted about it here, But I can't find the thread), And that Canon would be changing their marketing strategy this year. Looks like it might have been creditable with the release of the 3 new P&S cameras outside of one of the major trade shows!

From what I remember, He did mention something about a few new cameras being announced and something about the 20th or 22nd. So we could indeed see a 5D2 on the 22nd of April.

Here's some fuel for the fire Look, no pop-up flash. That might just be a full frame dSRL

Roughly translated from dutch:

Maybe you've caught the rumour. Sony will soon announce an absolutely high-end dSLR. The Sony Flash magazine will you get the sneak preview.

No Yakim, that's not the situation. The 5D 2 will (might) be announced on the 22nd April, but at Photokina a new flagship camera, surely a 1 series will be announced for release at PMA. The 5D II is not the flagship model.
