People shell out for the 40D when the rebel series does the same thing just as well
yep, because many need that slightly better AF, ergonomy, better build, etc... i had 20D as my first camera, 5D now and aiming for a better one...never go for a 1Ds, overkill for me both specifications and price, same for 1D, don't like crop FOV as i use it allround, indoors widest angle possible, etc...
on the other hand i shot with 400D, 350D, nikon d40, etc...never accomodate any of them, way u change iso, aperture, way u focus and take the picture and so on i consider cripple way....
there will allways be guys who need as many FPS as possible, 1.3 FOV, or as many pixels as possible, twin card slots, more options regarding way of acieving different settings (af point, iso, aperture, shutter, etc..) brick 1 series build, all the pro extra features u will get only on a 1 series...
a 3D camera make sense and being a cheaper one the volume selling will compensate losses on higher series and price tags... and do not forget that many cameras sold mean even more sells on accesories, lenses, flash units and so on... by far selling more cameras is more priofitable than selling just few...
for example let;s look on medium format digital ones...does ANY of the small exclusivist brands even get close in matter of profits to "consumer" producers in the same domain
i consider pro cameras less profitable but usefull and that because they promote the company brand and they show those millions who bring the profits that when they will want or need to go further, to better products, they are there... this is the main reason for a company to struggle offer high end products, not profit they make out of it directly...
