Now..."fake parts for our fighters?/airliners?"
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has discovered that a London-based company, AOG Technics, allegedly provided uncertified parts for the repair of aircraft engines used in many older-generation Airbus and Boeing jets. All this comes from a report by Bloomberg - something we’ll look at for today’s video.
I cannot say this story is true, but the effect is real:
A USAF mechanic was in a hardware store buying some hardware for his personal use when he spotted what looked like the same bolt used to mount the engine to the new C-5A that had entered USAF service. The story goes he investigated and found that the cheap, Chinese made bolt was indeed in the parts inventory. It had the correct head markings, but was truly inferior to what was to be used. Around this time, there were engine mounting connections failing due to these bolts. (The reality is the failure investigation probably found the problem and some airman made up the story, or, it could be true. I heard the story on our C-141 flight line at Norton AFB when we were discussing the problem with a grounded C-5A on our base.)
One of the effects from this discovery in the military and NASA was to test safety critical bolts. One of the companies I worked for managed the laboratory that tested a sample of bolts from every lot supplied to NASA Johnson Space Center contracts.
