My wife came in my home office to say that there was something with a little round head and ears looking in the window in our family room. And look at what was visiting! Cute little thing!

Looks like you got a screech owl? They are cute grumpy looking thing. Here is the only owl I have seen so far this this year, it's a great horned owl, I was told. Lucky I saw her right before sunset.

I believe you captured something quite rare. Consolidated PB4Y Privateer, a patrol bomber used mostly by the US Navy. Yours is sporting US Coast Guard livery. It could be 66302 – based in Casa Grande, Arizona.

Yup, a Screech owl. Only eared small owl in Texas. Red rather than grey (they come both ways).
Do I double down on the EF glass and get the 5D to keep shooting for the next 5-7 yrs, do nothing and take my chances, or is it time to start moving to RF? I have no issue with the photos I am getting, quality is very good. Perhaps my only complaint is 6D's focus and low continuous shooting rates, both would be fixed by the 5D. Or I can save my nickels and start moving to mirrorless; though even the R6 is $2400 ish.
Dan,
I have posted quite a few shots here that I made with a Canon 5D Mark IV and either a 100-400 MK II or a 500mm MK II. At that time I also had the 1DX MK II that you have. The combination was excellent and I have always thought that there was/is something very special about the colours and tones of the images produced by both those bodies.
With essentially the same autofocus system they are a perfect complement to each other and you get the benefit of the extra 10 megapixels with the Mark IV.
You have already got good EF glass, so maybe you should get the Mark IV. If your budget extends further then maybe you can find a good used EF 500mm MK II and a 1.4x Extender. The 500 is razor sharp and tolerates the extender very well. I found 700mm to be an almost perfect focal length for many air show cases - a worthwhile increment over 600mm without being too long.
That combination might bring you more benefit than a change to mirrorless. Just another angle to consider.

You are correct Ray Consolidated PB4Y-2 Privateer By Goshawk Unlimited out of Casa Grande Az, some of the Coap guys did a air to air with it Yesterday I guess
While I was at PIMA Air & Space in Tucson I asked the docents about the reason for the different orientation of the engines between the Privateer (inlets top and bottom) and the Liberator (inlets left and right). Believe it or not, I noticed that when I was an aviation-obsessed, detail-oriented kid and had always wondered why. Sad but true.
They were brilliant and helpful, with wonderful background on everything I asked, but on this topic they did not know why. I wonder if it is related to different turbo/supercharger installations? It may remain a mystery, but someone, somewhere must know....
Harry's post about his time flying a B-25 reminded me of my uncle. He was a B-25 mechanic during the war, but was never sent overseas. I believe he finished his service at Pampa Army Airfield in Texas.
I remember bringing him to air shows in the 1990s when he was around 80 years old. I wish I had photos of the look in his eye when he got to touch his first B-25 since 1945. Tears me up even now. He died in 1998.
This is him with (L-R) my grandmother, my Mom (who was probably 17 here), and my aunt. This is the whole family - my grandfather died in 1935. The story goes that since my grandmother was a widow and he was the only son, he was on the bottom of the list when it came to sending servicemen overseas. I know he felt guilty about not serving in a combat theater.
My aunt was around 25 in this photo - she died this past December at the age of 103, and on the same date as my grandmother died in 1973.
Thank you, gentlemen. I took a second look and saw that Jim was correct but the stabilizer left me wondering.
Warbird Digest has a video of this Privateer on their FB page. The caption is: "Goss Hawk's P4Y-2G Privateer BuNo 66302 (N2871G) as she departed for the Davis-Monthan AFB Open House." That may be the warbird fotoactvst saw.

Thank you, Dan. I've driven by those fields of white painted planes dozens of times but have never taken a tour. Abandoned and mummified just seems dishonorable.

Yep, COAP did a A2A shoot with the Privateer on its way to D-M from Casa Grande, looked great!
