When I was in San Bernardino in the early '70s (last century) my California born and raised roommate told me Southern Californians believe a yellow light means "speed up" and you don't stop until the light turn red. It rained one day when we were out and about and nearly every intersection with a light had an accident. It was funny watching people 100 feet away from the intersection began accelerating when the light turned yellow, only to slam on the brakes when it turned red before they got there. Those cars were sliding and spinning all over. Crazy!

Hahaha! You would think you lived in Texas. The only place worse than Texas roads with ice and snow are Southern California streets when it rains.

Sounds like the WashDC metro area Ray!
If it rains look out!!
If they call for snow or say "Stay off the roads" everyone flocks to the grocery store for toiletpaper and milk.
I moved here from Iowa. NO problems driving in snow, ice..whatever..people in the Midwest know how...
Back here? I need an Abrahms tank to get anywhere!!!

Actually it is easier if you take US RT1...directly South of Philly AP and just North up INT95 to RT1 to dam from BWI
Douglas's map has it! This view is the NEW area. You should have seen it 20+ years ago! A few members here and I met there many times!!!! No crowds! JUst eagles!!

When we went out to LA to photograph jets, the weather was horrible on Friday, so we went to Cajon Pass and chased trains. I had never been there before. We saw about six to eight trains in a span of a couple of hours. We plan to go back out there just to chase trains next April.

This was the first one we got.

Jay,

If you're coming to Southern Calif. for the railroads you might consider researching the Tehachapi Railroad loop.

I had the misfortune of having to drive in NYC for a couple hours on Monday, it's just crazy 3rd world type of driving. I drove there many times, especially when I worked there years ago. It's not just the traffic, it's the aggressiveness and the lack of courtesy. I guess if you are too "civil" in driving it will take you much longer to get anywhere

Douglas,
You want to experience crazy 3rd world driving? Go to India! 4 lanes for traffic but 7 or 8 lanes of cars; 250cc motorcycle with 5 passengers, freeway driving - motorcycle with man driving (he has helmet) and wife/girlfriend is sitting side saddle with arm over man sleeping & no helmet. Even saw a family of 4 on one motorcycle with mom sitting sidesaddle breast feeding a baby. It was the craziest place I have ever been.

Dan, China was like that and probably is still like that in many parts of the country. But in a lot of urban areas they have modern highways, trains and airports that are much more modern than those here. They have circuit cameras everywhere so the drivers in those urban areas are fairly well-behaved, without those cameras most of them would probably make their own rules.

I may be biased but I would think that a lot of the immigrants in NYC brought their bad driving habits from wherever they came from to here, this is not to say some of the natives are any better. In a congested place like NYC probably you can't be overly courteous if you want to go somewhere. Glad I live in suburb!

Yup, that was a bad looking landing for sure. Now the question will be, did the test pilot botch it, or did the jet misbehave. Either way, it won't buff out..................

This may be out of bounds on this board, and if so, I apologize. But I figured most people following this thread would appreciate this. The NY ANG 105th Airlift Wing out of Stewart Airport in Newburgh NY is a C-17 wing. Over the past week, they conducted a special training mission in conjunction with several other units focused on flying in contested airspace. I am not sure where this was flown, but it was either up in the Adirondacks, Vermont or New Hampshire (or all of them). But it is about as much seat-of-the-pants flying you can do in a 400,000lb+ airplane. Click on the image at the top of the story for the video.

ps. My son is a non-flying member of this unit and is being deployed to the Middle East in January.

1. Chas, God Bless the ANG! Cudos to your son!

2. I am playing with Topaz AI. I only have a 13 inch MBP to process my images at this time, so I would appreciate your impartial critique. Sharpening, noise reduction, artifacts, or whatever. How does this look?

Canon EOS R6
Focal length:88 mm
Exposure:1/1600 at f/4
Exposure bias:+2/3 EV
Exposure prog.:Shutter priority
ISO speed:ISO 25600

For iso 25600, pretty dam good, skins a little peely but not bad, the ball is dam smooth and sharp.
One hell of a capture, bet they'd love seeing that Eddie-

Looks amazing to me at ISO 25600! That’s way higher than my comfort level (10000) but sometimes a noisy shot is better than no shot. I have been using Topaz Denoise AI for a couple years, love it. I usually run the “clear” option with sharpening at “low” and denoise at various levels depending how much noise there is . But at “high” it renders the pictures too plasticky.

Thanks for the input Bill and Douglas. I am pushing the limits on processing, trying to find the envelope. Even when I zoom in it is hard for me to see defective processing because things get blurry. Really good comments, thanks!

If you have time to play around, you can try using the Lightroom's background selection feature to further remove the noise from the background, move the "texture" and "clarity" sliders a bit to the left, you will have a "smoother" background and the players will stand out more, just play with it to see how you like it without making the background too fake.

I went to Chennai, India, this year, for a "quick" job and let me tell you, the NASCAR drivers have NOTHING on the drivers in India. OMG !! The way my cab driver was driving me from the airport to my hotel, I probably needed new underwear when I got to my hotel, I know, I know, TMI. Talk about tailgating. It was unbelievable.

And some of them have brought their driving style to NYC.
