Holy Cow! Canon released a preliminary announcement on the R1 today. Surprisingly, the sensor will be 50mp, a bit disappointing, but acceptable. The dual, rear illuminated type found in the R3. The mechanical shutter has been eliminated and that will allow the R1 to shoot stills at up to 80fps! Looks like video specs go up to 8K@60 and 4K@240. The AF system will be revolutionary and the most accurate one anywhere, in anything, ever. Pricing will be $7,500-$8,000, and expected delivery is sometime in 2023.

I am sure today's date has nothing to do with that post!

Ugh! I didn't see the declaration that it was April Fool's! Seemed believable, except for the 50MP............
In reality, I wouldn't be surprised if the actual announcement isn't far off from most of those features. I don't think there's any way that Canon is going to get the R1 out in this calendar year though.

Since there are people on the R3 waiting list since last October, yeah, I don't think this is the year the R1 will hit the shelves. Tough times for manufacturers...and us!
Actually, I am somewhat relieved by the lag in deliveries, it gives me time to catch my breath between the R5c and the next release. I'm looking forward to having the R5 and R5c in the line up. Canon's challenge will be to make the R1 exceptional enough to make me want to throw seven or eight grand at it when I have the formidable capabilities of the R5 team at my fingertips.
I'm fairly confident that I'll have the "c" in my hands in the next 30 days. I'm heading to Competitive this morning to get another piece of Westcott equipment, the FJ80 "speedlight". I don't have a back up to my Canon RT600 and I'm shooting a high profile gala for the Child Advocacy Center tonight and it got me thinking about only having one on camera strobe. If what I am reading about the FJ80 is accurate, the RT600 will become my backup. The RT600 has always been ok, but at $600 plus it isn't tremendously impressive, hoping the FJ80 is, at 1/2 the cost, and it will talk to my FJ400 system.
If anyone here would like an R3 just let me know, I've let four of them go by and can probably get you one fairly expeditiously. Still not regretting my decision to pass on it.
Unboxing the FJ80 and charging batteries, looks like a solid product. While I was at Competitive Eugene mentioned that I could pick up my R5c Monday afternoon, that was a nice surprise!
Many years ago I went snow skiing. Since I didn't know what the heck to do (I am a Texas boy after all) and I had just entered the USAF (means I was broke), I listened to a nearby instructor teaching beginners how to ski. The most important thing I took away from his teaching was to "look where you want to go". I have applied that eavesdropped message many times in my life. This girl obviously learned that lesson earlier than I did. She is looking at the goal and goalkeeper to determine where to place her shot. She got the hat trick last night, 3 goals!
Spent 8 hours shooting the gala last evening and I'm paying the price today. A dozen trips up and down the stadium stairs at The Star took their toll. Great event, Children's Advocacy Center, people dedicated to dealing with and treating sexually abused children, an outstanding mission and a wonderful group of people. The gala was the first since the pandemic turned the world upside down and the crowd was intent on having a wonderful time and enjoying their freedom. I haven't heard the final numbers but I'd guess that they raised a million bucks last night. I spent a couple of hours in Jerry Jones' suite and then we all moved down on the field for the main event.
The R5 endeared itself to me even more last night. To think that I used to shoot these things on 36 exposure rolls while crossing my fingers until the frames came out of the soup, scary! This orchestra played for three solid hours and they were outstanding...........
