...and just like that it is soccer season👎. 32° and it "feels like" 22°. Two pairs of pants, two jackets, knit hat and a hoodie and I froze my patootie off! Went up to the press box to process the photos and my fingers didn't work. Guess why I don't like soccer! This was a new field for the high school so I wasn't sure of the light. I took my 300 II attached to my R6 because soccer fields in Central Texas are not given a lot of upgrades. More like cow pastures with incandescent lighting. This turned out to be the nicest soccer field I have shot on. Very nice. I could have used my 100-400. It was so cold I didn't want to freeze while I changed lenses.

This is a rotation year so the field is in wheat, otherwise it would be in corn. Sorry! For rice, you would have to go up to the Brazos river valley where they have river irrigation. Otherwise there is rice on the Texas gulf coast (many of those fields on the coast were owned and farmed by Japanese immigrants until WWII).

I came from Iowa in the late 50's Ray and the town we grew up in was a agri town so crop rotation is nothing new to me! It is what good farmers do. Return nutrients back into the soil. Great work!!!
Brother Jim has come to our rescue with a few boxes of Rice Krispies comin our way.
Suzanne's surgery requires only rice, white flower or corn based foods due to her iliostomy.

Wish I was there to help you Ray! I think I was meant to be a farmer...just life got in the way.

Digging out from 4" of snow..it is pretty but I hate shovelling it! And only 19F!! But heh wait...tomorrow it will be 70F!!! ...just kidden but not unexpected for Maryland!

Dan, we also got 4" this morning, headed out to my favorite place for sunrise but the clouds weren't that colorful. I may head out to Gettysburg this afternoon for some fun in cold and wind. I have some rice that I can bring you, if you can cook it. Just let me know.

I love your 'barn' photos Douglas. Many of ours are coming down these days due to so many people migrating to Central Texas.
A friend asked me to take some photos of what is left of this barn on their old family farm site. (Their grandfather built the barn.). The dirt you see at the lower part of the frame and toward the left is a new bypass/industrial road the city is constructing for increased "supply chain" traffic in their warehouse distribution district. They also had to cut part of the 100+ year old pecan tree for the power lines they had to move. Fortunately for this barn, a friend of the family petitioned the city to allow them to strip the barn wood to replace deteriorating siding on their old barn. The city gave them less than a month to finish. Their relative who is very old and did not want to fight the city got over $3 million for 150 acres. I guess my tax evaluation will be going up next year

Thanks Ray. With all the new housing developments going up, there are only 3 places within 15 minutes drive from where I live that have open view for sunrise, this barn is one of them. I have taken dozens of pictures of this barn at sunrise, people think I am crazy, but I love red barn in snow! The barn with the trees in your picture could make really pretty photos in good lighting. I read somewhere barns were bought for the lumber because now the lumber price is so high. I wish I had 150 acres..

People used to ask me how I could stand being in so many ice rinks when the kids were still playing hockey. I told them it was actually not that cold, watching them play soccer was way colder and uncomfortable. Cold, windswept fields in late fall or early spring. Brrrr. At least there isn't any wind in a rink.

We got about 8 inches here. Snowblowed my wife's car out early this morning so she could get to work, but I won't have time to do the rest (and the neighbors I usually do) until later today. It's still about 30F, but I need to get the snow cleared before temps start dropping.

Here is the Sacks Covered Bridge, in two versions.. For those who are not familiar, this bridge was used by both sides of the Gettysburg Battle.

Douglas these are just spectacular!!! I was reviewing my images of the Sachs CB from 10-15 years ago in winter.
Your selective coloring really makes it pop!

I have about a dozen covered bridges from mostly S. Pa near Bedford that I must edit. All are in the winter time so BW should really make them more enjoyable.
Will play with them later.

BTW..Bedford County is "the" place for covered bridges in a small area. There is a map on the Bedford, Pa website!
Again just great images!

Thanks Dan! I drove by Bedford, Pa a couple times on the way to Latrobe for airshows. Never knew anything about covered bridges in Bedford. Isn't it where Dick Winters of the Band of Brothers came from? I shot the 4 covered bridges in your neck of woods a few times too. Gettysburg has some beautiful red barns.

In the meantime, here is the same old local red barn from this morning. We have had several really nice sunrises this past week. And we got rainbow and snow this morning too!

Texas is chilly with gusts to 30+ so I am playing with the R5 today. I've been amassing "Small Rig" video tools to attach to it over the last few months and I think the system turns the R5 into a very cool cinema camera....................

Jim, is that Smallrig a hood? I have never shot videos with my cameras. I bought a drone a year ago but haven't even bothered to learn how to fly it.

Good afternoon Douglas. Yes, that is called a "matte box" in video parlance. The Small Rig components are first, the cage that surrounds the camera and allows for strategic placement of any number of attachments. Then the handle that mounts on top, the wooden grip on the left side really helps balance the camera, and the matte box that helps keep light flares to a minimum and allows for filters, etc. The Atomos Ninja V monitor is attached with a Small Rig bracket and connects to the R5 via HDMI 2.0, and the microphone is an Azden unit that can be switched between a shotgun and a stereo pattern.

I would have had this all together a month ago but the cage for the R5 with a battery pack installed just arrived a few days ago, it's a brand new design. The Atomos Ninja V allows me to record up to 8K video in the camera and externally to a 2TB SSD and it is an HD monitor as well so it's much more accurate for exposure and focus.
