Here are some shots from yesterday's trip to Arlington National Cemetery. The snow was so deep and sticky that most of the Christmas wreaths were invisible or barely visible. ANC is always beautiful in snow, so serene and peaceful.
Most of these shots were taken through metal bar fence, the gap between the bars are too narrow to stick the camera through, so there wasn't much choice for desired angles/compositions.
A side note, the Xi virus finally hit our family. My daughter just came back from California last night and she did a quick home test, positive. She is young and healthy so hopefully it won't be too bad. Her rental car in San Francisco was broken into within hours after she rented it, on a busy street at a park. The police don't even take reports anymore. Sad state our country is in....Show more →
I find these all fantastic Douglas but the BW one is just superb!!!!
ANC is seldom seen as you picture here!
YES and prayers to the health of you daughter!!!!!

Thank you, gentlemen! This morning I took a bit of risk to drive to Arlington National Cemetery before sunrise. It was warned that roads could be icy overnight due to the snow from yesterday and the freezing temperature. The highways were OK by and large. It's crazy to see some people still driving at 70-75 MPH in this type of condition. All it takes is a patch of black ice. The news said some people stuck in the traffic for 22 hours from yesterday.

My brother had clients with horses stuck in that traffic stoppage in VA. He said it was 15 hrs before the fire department was able to get them water.
So far you folks in the DC area have had more snow than us in Boston. Even Nantucket has had more snow. Looks like that is changing on Friday.
Douglas, hope your daughter is OK. Our daughter's boyfriend just tested positive - half the hockey team has it. Do you suppose it has anything to do with a crowded, steamy locker room?
Our daughter was exposed by one of her kids at work and she had symptoms just before Christmas, but after two negative tests we decided to all get together on Christmas anyway. Now she's been exposed again at work, not to mention her boyfriend. And they were here for New Years. So we'll see what happens.

Mark, my daughter lives in DC. She hangs out with her friends from college and work. Before she came home for Christmas, she did a home test and it was negative. Then she went to California for vacation for a week with her boyfriend. I am not surprised a bit that she got it. But her boy friend was tested negative. So far her symptoms seem to be very mild, she eats healthy, exercises, and is vaxed, all these help, I suppose.
I can’t imagine getting stuck on highway for 20 hours in snow and cold. Some people said Virginia should have closed the highway before the storm hit if they don’t have the capacity to deal with such amount of snow coming down in a short time. Some people drive like they do in a nice sunny day during snow and get into accidents. I usually drive fast (and never hog the left lane) but I am very very cautious driving in bad weather. When I was driving to Arlington to photograph the cemetery early in the morning on Tuesday, it was 20 degrees and it was warned that roads could be icy from the snow on Monday. I stayed at speed limit or even below it at times, but some people were going at 20 MPH over the limit in this kind of condition and in darkness. They think they are invincible, until they get into accident. Yesterday afternoon I was following a car on a ramp merging onto a highway, he or she was a bit too fast and the right side of the car went over a bit of snow on the shoulder, the car spun 360 degrees, right where the ramp and the highway meet. Lucky for the driver and for me, I left quite a bit distance behind that car and the cars on the highway stopped in time. I bet the driver was scared the shit out of him or her. We are getting 2-4" more snow tonight, it's feast or famine. But I love photographing snow. Growing up in southern China, I had never seen snow until I was 26 when I went to school in Ohio,

Virginia really blew this storm Douglas! Not 1 live photo from the height of the storm or the morning after, show 1 emergency vehicle! Not a snow plow in sight anywhere except in the local municipalities. Not even fire or police vehicles.
Virginia Natl Guard called to help but as I understand the tv bloviating, they were denied the opportunity to help.
Then the politicians try to blame the Governor elect, who hasn't taken office yet, of the fiasco.
Here in my area, the snow plows, salt trucks and brine trucks were lined up on the ramps from I70 to Baltimore and I270 South to the Montgomery County line at 0800am when we were on our way to doctor's appointments and they were there the night before also.
Luckily all the snow went Southeast.
Praying for your daughter's quick and non eventful recovery!
Even though Suzanne and I have been vac'd and boosted, we have begun wearin masks again...
Now anybody have Rice Krispies? Can't find a box here or in Texas!!!!

Thanks Dan! Yeah, I heard some pundits blamed Youngkin for the mess, they didn't realize he is the governor-elect, he is not even in charge yet. Surprised they didn't blame Trump.. In all seriousness, regardless who was in charge, there wasn't a quick fix to the situation once the a couple tractor trailers flipped. I can imagine it was very hard for emergency vehicles to get through. They should have closed off the highway if they don't have the capacity to plow it constantly, instead of letting people get on the highway, not knowing what they were getting into.

I wonder why they don't create a center, emergency use only lane between barriers on highways. This is true for any emergency. Traffic backs up and the emergency crews cannot get to the scene. They could have barrier entry/exits every mile or so on each side for emergency access. I think in Europe some countries have drivers who vacate the left lane for emergency vehicles when there is an accident.
Was going through some older files this week and this one caught my eye. My wife went up to Seattle for Memorial Day back in 2018 and this Air Canada B-737 MAX was being delivered that day.
Sure is cold today in Texas with the wind howling, cannot begin to imagine how cold it is in Canada. Brrrrrr.
Nice that the unions in Michigan decided a strike in the middle of a pandemic and a supply chain mess would be good thing to do. My faith in human nature is skimming along the bottom and I don't see it coming back anytime soon!

I have about a 100 acres of wheat in the field, unfortunately it won't be ready until late May, early June. If things get bad before then I will have to harvest the local rabbits. I do have friends with hogs and cattle. It's good to have friends.

This is a rotation year so the field is in wheat, otherwise it would be in corn. Sorry! For rice, you would have to go up to the Brazos river valley where they have river irrigation. Otherwise there is rice on the Texas gulf coast (many of those fields on the coast were owned and farmed by Japanese immigrants until WWII).
