Hi Jim. A long time since I posted here. I’m interested in your choice of R3 over the 1Dx3. I have recently got the R5 and love it but, without any air shows (except Shuttleworth), it is difficult to assess its capabilities on fast jets. I also have 1Dx and 1Dx2. I had a lot of probs with 1Dx when I got it - the shutter box was replaced but it still throws lots of cxxp on the sensor in Fast mode. I am intending to change it but can’t decide between 1Dx3 and R3 - I suppose I could hang around for the R1 but that’s at least another year! What are your thoughts on R3 vs 1Dx3

From what I'm hearing the R1 will be along later in 2022 and then my nitpicking can end. Until then the R5/R3 combination will work just fine.
So great to hear from you! Well, your 1DXII experience is typical, it always throws trash on the sensor, the III is much better, but not crud free for sure. Without hesitation I would suggest that you buy the R3, especially if you are happy with MP counts in the twenties, it would be a dream camera for you. I don't need it typically, but the frame rates on these cameras is insane, even if you stick with mechanical shutter settings. The R5 is an outstanding camera and I love the sensor size, it's all moving in the mirrorless direction. Let me know if I can fill you in on anything else re: the R3.
I tweaked this just a bit from your RAW file, see what it looks like to you............... I think it's still 1/3 of a stop over, but it might be a good middle ground. You could probably dial back your ISO a little in that lighting scenario.
I like it. I talked to a local sports photographer (100% professional) who shoots for another paper. He also told me my photos looked "bright". I told him why I processed/shot them that way and responded "More often mine are darker in print than I see. They do have some control when they set it up and I’m not always confident they know what they’re doing."
Think I am going back to how I use to shoot/process the photos to match what you processed.
Thanks Jim, I always appreciate/like input from others.
Whilst sitting in a Lockdown UK last year I managed to be awarded my ARPS in Applied genre with a set of 15 aircraft prints. I'll post the lot eventually (plus the Hanging Plan) but here is the top row of three for starters.
Got my Pfizer booster this morning, so far so good.
Some flying subjects: Went to Conowingo Dam recently to shoot eagles, the activities were unusually slow for this time of the year. Wasn't able to get decent diving shots, too far away.
Saw this pair (the first two pictures) flying in airshow formations, I took some shots for shits and giggles. They were so far away that the final JPEG in these two files is just 1 MP, from a 50MP camera. Will go back there again when things pick up. I met folks who flew in from California, some folks drove many hours from other states to get there, from the chatting with them, I can tell you this, they were not happy with the gas price!
In case anyone is looking for the new Canon RF 100/2.8 macro lens, mine just shipped and my supplier has a couple more that will be available in the next week. I added this lens specifically for my medical products manufacturer.
Thank you Zane! A few from yesterday. It's unusually slow for this time of the year, the eagles are not doing much yet at that location. They were very far away from where the photographers were. All these were heavily cropped, only about 85% of the frames were kept, even at 840mm FL.
Just unboxed, paired and updated GoPro Hero 10 Black (number 2). This unit behaved itself through the start up procedure, let's see how it does on the maiden voyage tomorrow afternoon. Whatever it does, it has to be better than version one. Good news is, since I returned mine and bought this one, they included an extra battery and some attachments. Definitely not worth the frustration, but oh well.

Enjoy your new toy, Jim! I bought a drone last year but haven't learned how to fly it yet
Thank you! What drone did you buy? You need to get it in the air. I'll never be able to thank Mike Brewington sufficiently for encouraging me to open up the drone world and getting me out on the ledge. I can only imagine, with your talent, what you will create using your drone. Wonderful Eagle images, as usual!

Thanks Jim! I bought a DJI Air Pro 2 from craiglist, supposedly a very good model. I almost forgot I bought one, until I wanted to get some footage of fall foliage from the air two weeks ago, then I found out the guy who sold me the drone didn't include the cable that connects the remote to the iPhone. I ordered the cable but haven't gone through the manual yet.
